Apartment Therapy reader Joy sent us in a DIY that was part of a larger home office makeover project she recently completed for a client. Looking to save dollars wherever possible, she redid an old rolling cabinet to have the much more mod look and style of the red TPS cabinet from CB2…

Here is what Joy had to say about the project: I recently did an office makeover project. My client had a limited budget, and I always try to repurpose existing items- to save on money and scrimp on waste. She had an old oak veneer filing cabinet she thought we would have to throw out, but with a bit of spray paint we transformed it to look like the much pricier CB2. Thought I would share!
Thanks Joy!

Amazing!
Wow, looks great!!
Very nice! I've been looking for a filing cabinet but don't want to spend 100 plus on such a small piece of furniture. This is a great idea!
From the pictures, I think it actually looks better (it has more personality) than the CB2 one!
Great job!
I think it looks more like this one from Ikea: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30137921 but still nice!
Soooo glad you posted this - I've been hunting for a new filing cabinet for several months! Such bland options. This opens up a whole new world!
Inspiring!
Yep, MUCH better than the CB2. Bet it's better quality too, w/ no off-gassing. Way to go !
shoot, looks better than the cb2 one!
good job! the oval pulls are clearly superior!
I love these before and afters!
I need to do this to my boring filing cabinet! Joy, did you use spray primer as well?
That looks great! Very cool.
Congrats on a great job; it looks fantastic.
I love it when people go the extra mile and work to make something old, all new again. That file cabinet is the right color for my apt. also, so file cabinet, here I come to find you. sincerely, mary
I love that orange, yum!
Love it! I got an ugly grey desk for free on Craigslist and refinished it (along with a filing cabinet) in Cape Cod Cranberry for a friend. I also got a beat-up metal filing cabinet and transformed it into a bright purple home office show-stopper for another friend.
Vintage Refinisher, can i be your friend?
Thanks for the comments! Super easy project with great big results. @Mindy- I gave it a light sanding and sprayed with primer to ensure a good tooth for the paint to grab. After a few coats of the orange dried I went over it with a coat of poly to prevent chipping, since it will be handled often.
do you paint the insides of the drawers too?
