Organization is my number one battle when it comes to my home. If something is tucked away in a drawer with a million other things, it might as well be lost forever, and as a result I'm a huge fan at organization systems that display contents at a glance. I think the first magazine that ever revolutionized my life was the Real Simple that suggested using a clear hanging shoe organizer for storing spices— so simple, so genius! I immediately began thinking of the million other things that could be organized in these contraptions...
• 1. Gift wrapping tools
• 2. Sewing supplies
• 3. First and and bathroom supplies.
• 4., 5. Jewelry and accessories. Organize.com adapted the concept to better organize smaller items such as jewelry. I have the canvas one hanging on a hook on the inside of my closet door— organization perfection!
What clever uses have you found for your hanging shoe organizer?

I can't imagine having a bathroom or linen closet WITHOUT a clear shoe pocket organizer to hold my stuff (medications, hairbands, spare toothpaste and mouthwash, etc). When space was really tight, in another home, I used a clear one to hold spices in the kitchen (behind the kitchen door to the hallway) and a canvas one to hold gardening tools & supplies (at the back door).
I have five shoe organizers. One in the kitchen for my tea collection. One in the basement for screwdrivers, clamps, etc. One for art supplies. One for cleaning supplies. And even one for shoes.
I hung a canvas shoe organizer with mesh pockets from the inside of the door to the toilet room in my motorhome. I have lots of cabinet space in the dressing room, but no drawers. The shoe organizer fills that capacity perfectly without taking up precious floor space. I have a pocket for first aid, one for hair stuff, one for nail supplies, one for cat grooming tools, etc.
I have 3.
1 in the entry closet for...well shoes.
2. in my bedroom closet for scarves, the shelf variety - not pocket.
3. 1 hanging in the tiny laundry closet for laundry supplies.
I love the functionality of these organizers, but would never use one where it would be seen. Mine are all behind closed doors.
I have one inside my bedroom closet door. It's fabric mesh. I adore it. I use the lower section for back-up supplies, the mid section for items I frequently use and the top for scarves and hair bands. If it's small and might otherwise be cluttering up my bedroom dresser, it's in my shoe rack.
Oddly, I hate using these to store shoes.
I use mine in the entrance hall closet for mittens, gloves, scarves, hats....I think I keep the shoe shine kit and the waterproofing spray in there, and maybe a few other odd things. There are no drawers in the entry.
I live on a small eco-tourism cruise ship during our Northern winters, as a kayak guide, in Antarctica. Our shared cabins are tiny so I bring along a lightweight mesh shoe organizer for all my hats, gloves, neck gaiters and hand-warmers. Attaching it top and bottom beside my bunk it also forms a bit of a screen. I bring along a second, chopped off one which I hang in the kayak room to hold kayaking essentials and of course the mandatory penguin soft toy.
We have one in our closet that holds belts, gloves, beanies, and scarves.
We hardly ever get into it though because it doesn't get below 40 degrees too often around East Texas (c:
I have one in the laundry room for dryer sheets, clothes pins and orphan socks.
I have another in the office for headphones, camera cords, batteries, etc.
I have a third in the pantry for holding sandwich baggies, chipclips, saran wrap, and less-used gadgets like my meat tenderizer or my poultry shears.
Thank you for a great idea. This is a perfect solution to the lack of storage space in my small apartment.
I have used these in my daughter's room since she was a baby. I keep all her powder, lotion, creams, medicine, etc in one on the outside of her closet door. Another one on the inside of the closet door holds her shoes, socks, tights, hats, etc. She has such a tiny bedroom, it really helps me keep things organized. Also it was a lot cheaper than buying another, or bigger, dresser to store things in.
To end the morning battle of what to where for my daughter (probably started around 3, she is now 5), I put away outfits in each pocket. She can pick what she wants to wear!
I used to have a similar one in my son's nursery to hold lotions, diapers and other stuff I was constantly needing within close range. I hung a shelf type over the door one for shoes and it keeps coming apart (plastic shelf plus metal dowel style) so I believe I'll be making a trip to my look BBB for a few of these. I love the idea of storing the kid's art supplies in one!
I use mine as an organizer for kids art supplies and craft materials. The things that I don't want my 3 year old to have access to go at the top and the things that she can use without assistance are near the bottom.
I use one hanging up in my craft area to hold scissors, stencils, and other various craft items...I use one in my bathroom on the back of the door to hold various hygiene supplies, and one in my bedroom for those bits and pieces I need on a regular basis but not every day.
I have one hanging near my office area on the hidden side of the door for computer cables---printer, iPod, Kindle etc. Also one on the inside door of the bathroom for hairdryer and other odds/ends.
Very nice but i just cant get in to those and my doors are to thick for them to hang over
Tights, gloves, and hats.
SillyKester--I screwed mine to the door so as to not have the hooks going over the top. I just put the screws through the grommets at the top and added grommets to the bottom to secure it.
i have one with various colors & sizes of pockets that i found at lowe's a few years back. i've never been able to find them again, but like those much better than the mono-sized, single-colored ones. i had mine hanging behind my kitchen door & used it for incoming/outgoing mail, bills, pens/paper/sticky notes, and other handy-but-almost-out-of-sight things. wish i could find more of those.
I love the many other uses you have listed for shoe racks! Thanks for sharing
