Though I adore my tiny city apartment, I dream of someday living in the country, with a beautifully sturdy bell at the end of a long driveway, so visitors can announce their arrival. I have very specific daydreams. Some of these bells might fit the bill, some seem far too fragile to live outside, and the wind chimes are here to add their sparkly, tinkly magic..

1. This large porcelain bell from L & M Studio is my favorite so far. It is handmade, six inches in diameter, and altogether dreamy. It is sturdy enough to be hung outside, but should be brought in during the winter.
2. Made In Design carries Maison Martin Margiela's Edo Bell, which is more of a bubble than a bell. It is a traditional glass Japanese bell, and though it looks incredibly fragile, apparently it can be hung outdoors.
3. The MQuan Firefly Bell from Spartan is cheerful and classic, and reminds me of a bocce ball. It is a ceramic bell hung from a hemp rope, also suitable for outdoor use.
4. Irona Works has created what they call The Mother Of ALL Windchimes & Bells, a 1-foot tall bell that is not fooling around. It is handcrafted out of recycled antique metal and will develop a pretty patina if kept outside.
5. Mudpuppy makes moon chimes that have the loveliest natural buff finish. They look dainty but are crafted to withstand the elements.
6. Besides the behemoth above, Irona Works makes lots of other bells & chimes, including these Unique Shape Windchimes. I find them adorable, probably in part because they remind me of teapots.
7. This last set of chimes is not at all my style, but I thought you'd like to see it. Handmade by Erin Smith, these wind chimes from Ship & Shape seem like a serious bargain for $38. Handmade terra cotta chimes hang by from a handpainted wooden rod, with leather and copper accents. That's a lot of work for $38!
