Now I'll be the first person to admit I have a dog bed in almost every room of the house. When it comes to the bedroom our dogs want to sleep as close as possible and usually that means there's a dog bed in place of where a night stand should be. These fine folks have a better solution and bonus — it's diy-able on the cheap!
This bed is not only DIY, it's built with actual function in mind. Dog beds take up a ridiculous amount of space and in the bedroom, there's a good chance if you're in there for an afternoon snooze, your pooch is probably camped out right next to you instead of in their bed.
This bed has been built with a sliding bunk for their dog that is able to be pushed back in each morning so no one is tripping over it or it's out if guests peek their head in the door. Dog beds aren't exactly unsightly items and are a given if you have an animal in the home, but sometimes you're just tired of stepping over them!

I like the idea but feel a big dog would damage that pull out after some time.
Duvets should ALWAYS be in covers. It's like sleeping on a pillow with no pillow cover.
What a shin-buster! My dog also sleeps in the bedroom a lot of the day hours also, so I'd need to leave it open all the time. After a long stint where my medium-sized dog's bed was under a table-like nightstand, I replaced that set-up with her wire crate, so that I can contain her in there when needed, and it's not as dark and gloomy as the furniture was. I put a small tray on top to hold a few nightstand-type items. BTW, here are wooden furniture-type end table/dog crates on the market but I'm not inclined to buy one because it seems they don't let in much light.
While I appreciate the concept of this bed, I agreed with medusa12120 that this place is big enough to have a separate dog bed. It would work much better in a smaller area.
I LOVE IT!!! you know the dog wants to be as close, if not on top, to the bed so this is a great idea. Now you don't have to worry about a dog bed taking the space in your room where you can put beautiful furniture in place. I have a dog and i know the feeling.
I think it's clever and practical. I have a very large master bedroom, but that doesn't mean I want my beautiful floors covered up with a dog bed no matter how nice the dog bed looks. This is something I'd consider doing for our gargantuan dog. It would be really nice to be able to shove the dog bed away when entertaining.....come to think of it, my dog's current bed will fit under our bed. Now I know where to put it! Love the chairs as nightstands!
Who wants to pull that out and push it in every day? It'd be much better used as storage, and the dog bed put somewhere the dog can access it whenever it wants to.
Meh, not my type of thing. Plus, what my dog would do is sleep on it for ten to thirty minutes and then wake up and decide it's too hot (or some other reason) and go sleep on the floor itself.
Also, sidenote, agreed with mschatelaine, duvet needs a cover.
We just adopted a new dog who isn't into sleeping on the bed with us all night like our Shiba Inu is, and we don't have a lot of extra space for a dog bed, so something like this may actually work pretty well. He doesn't go into the bedroom during the day at all, only at night to sleep.
For the dog? No.
For desperately needed linen storage? Yes!
Not particularly useful to me for several reasons, mainly because i have 3 small dogs who refuse to share any bed no matter what size it is.
That being said, I think it's a great solution for lots of dog owners. Very clever :)
A great idea! But I don't think my dog would like being stored inside the bed while I am at work :/
@j808: HAAAAAAAAAAAA!
I would trip over this in the middle of the night.
This might sound crazy - but I think that's a perfect idea for kids :) When they get scared and want to climb in bed, have them pull out their bed at the food of yours so you still have room and no kid knees in your back.
@MamaGigi - I think there was a house tour a few months back with a family of three living in a on bedroom that did just that. I like it better for the kid - the dog is just going to use it as a stepping stone to climb into bed with you.
My dog sleeps on a blanket on the floor at the foot of our bed. I would LOVE this little pull out to stow it away from time to time.
So if you close this during the day, where's the dog going to sleep while you're at work?
You got it: Right in the middle of your bed!
I like the idea but feel a big dog would damage that pull out after some time.
Judging from the lines in the carpet, the thing's on castors or some other form of support, so the dog's weight is probably irrelevant.
This is a very clever and neat idea to meet the competing needs of dog and human. The pet bed is conceptually part of the human bed, keeping the dog happy, without forcing the humans to compromise their comfort.
This is such a clever idea! I would probably leave it open too when I'm not home.
I to do not have a cover for my duvet. It's just so soft & cushy that I couldn't bear covering it. I know it's more wear & tear on it but I'm happy with my cover-less choice.
My parents solved the problem years ago by having the dogs sleep downstairs in their own space. They rarely come upstairs and so their dander and such is confined to one space. This makes it nice for company who are allergic to animals.
Having watched dogs do what dogs do I don't understand why anyone would want them - even they are the cutest ever - anywhere near the bed without a bath. But your fun-to-monkey ratio probably varies.
Woah - I'm on Apartment Therapy! Thanks guys, what an honor!
To respond to some of the comments above:
This project isn't quite finished yet. The front of the trundle will be finished in stained birch and have a metal handle to easily pull it out and push it in.
To all those who commented about where the dogs sleep during the day - the actually aren't allowed in the bedroom while we are at work. They stay in our main room, where this is a custom dog bed for their use. So they aren't sleeping on our bed during the day, nor the dog trundle.
Though our room looks big, we don't have the room to have dog beds on the floor without tripping over them constantly. The dog trundle works perfect for us - I understand that it might not be the right solution for others. The dogs don't use it as a "stepping stone" onto the bed - neither enjoys sleeping on the bed through the night.
We don't need the extra storage (we have plenty of closets) so using a trundle for extra storage never crossed our minds.
As for the duvet cover, we are just on the search for a well fitting, non-dog-hair-attracting one that matches in the room. Though I have nothing against plain duvets.
Thanks for the comments!
@blandwagon: You're right, it is on a set of wheels at the moment. When we switch this room over to hardwood, we'll change it to felt bottomed casters.
Great idea.
It's a neat idea, but my dog would have none of it. Samson the pug prefers being underneath the covers next to me.
