Nothing short of a goldmine, this is the best kept secret in the DC area. In fact, I almost did keep it a secret, but then I remembered AT is all about sharing the design wealth. In this case, you won't need a lot of wealth — just a friend with a pickup truck and a free afternoon — to get your style fix. The Design House provides enough visual inspiration to satiate even the most famished eye, and in terms of quantity (30 vendors), variety (Louis chairs to vintage milk bottles to 50s heels), and prices ($5-$2,500) you'd be hard pressed to find even a close second to the treasure packed store...
What was once a U.S. Post Office property in rural Northern Virginia is now a home goods store, antique shop, and salvage yard packed with everything and anything the owner and her stylish crew deem "vintage hip."
And as if that wasn't enough, they rework their Design House monthly in order to give customers an idea of how to use their wares in a home setting — perfect for those who love treasures but hate the hunt.
Each room in the Design House (a separate building from the Store) is furnished to its function: bedrooms with beds, porches with lounge furniture, etc. They unveil the House's fresh ideas the first weekend every month.
What struck me most, aside from the fabulously upbeat staff and host of awesome furniture under $100, was that unlike most antique shops and flea markets, there was very little that I could actually call "junk." There is a TON of stuff, but each piece seems meticulously chosen.

Good God there is some really great things here. They have a zinc table top with a wood base, drool!
I'd love some finches in that beautiful house shaped birdcage, and that rabbit looks like a character! Loved the historic feel of Leesburg. This inspires me to want to visit again.

They have a special event in May, when other vendors come out and set up in the open space across the street. It is amazing; go then!
dude, this is like the fiftieth time that Luckett's store has been featured on AT. it is a nice antique store with some moderate prices, but most of the stuff in there is expensive and not only that, its really really dirty. I bought a table that still has dirt caked and baked onto the surface after hours of scrubbing. not that i'm complaining about the store, I just feel like people should actually know what they're getting into before they drive an hour and fifteen minutes from DC proper to Lucketts, Virginia.
what i am complaining about is how AT DC keeps rehashing the same old stuff. you aren't really giving us new information. do a cursory search on Luckett's on AT and you'll find tons of store tours and references. we get it - its a great place to find crappy country furniture at sort of reasonable prices. i think AT DC has to learn that the people of DC are not either into politics or the same antique store. there's more going on here in terms of decorating / design and I don't think it is being explored here.
Luckett's used to have great prices until it started getting in magazines and blogs all the time. Still a favorite of mine to visit when I go home to MD.
What can we do to help AT DC? Do you want more tours? Store recommendations?
I noticed that another blog profiled Oh a Whim, an antique store near Lucketts, just a few hours before this was posted. I wasn't going to say anything...just imagined it was a slow design news day in the District and you all needed some ideas.
Instead of complaining, I thought I'd be a little productive and ask what sorts of posts we could help with.
Regarding topics, some more tours of DC homes would be nice, and tips on shopping in and around DC. Perhaps post some profiles of DC-based interior designers and architects who are doing innovative things.
I have to say I found it a little depressing to see the explanation, recently, as to why "Southern" style was being allocated to the DC board - first, because DC has its own style and interesting things to report on, which has yet to be tapped, and second, because the style deemed Southern was a very narrow and stereotypical view of what that encompasses.
RE Lucketts store: I have been there a number of times and own several pieces from there. You can find good deals but in general you get what you pay for. BE SURE to inspect anything you are buying very carefully before purchasing. I bought a dresser there that was not inexpensive and it had significant damage on the back that was concealed by how it was displayed, and was not apparent to me until it was delivered (and no, the damage did not occur while en route the 1 mile to my farm).

As a Southerner, I find some of the recent descriptions of Southern style narrow and stereotypical as well. I think the South has interesting things to show. I just don't think the region needs to be labeled in a particular way.
