The Red Balloon

Do you do movie night at your house? I never thought of having movie night for the kids until I saw it on a reality tv show last year (the one that features 8 kids). I was waiting until the kids were old enough for the first screening.

A few weeks ago on a rainy Friday night, we fired up the DVD player and popped in the newly purchased The Red Balloon (Le Ballon Rouge) by Albert Lamorisse. This is a perfect pick for movie night - relatively short in length, very little dialogue, and enjoyable for kids and parents alike. The Red Balloon was a childhood favorite of mine for years.

To make movie night special, I gave the kids one red balloon each and popped some popcorn. The evening was a success and the kids really enjoyed the film. The following week we went to a play based on Lamorisse's film - a great adaptation. It reinforced everyone's interest in the film so when we asked what we should view on our next movie night, the answer was The Red Balloon again. The plan is to make movie night Friday night event for the entire summer.

If you have movie recommendations for movie night, please let us know in the comments.
