We got a tip about an incredible new 90-second video produced by The Rug Company to describe the process of how their rugs are made by hand.
With no verbal narration and just a fast-paced musical soundtrack to guide you, the movie breezes through the intricate steps of creating a rug from raw wool to finished product. Understanding all the careful planning and physical effort that is involved in their production sheds light on why some rugs are so expensive, but more importantly, why they're worth the price. The Rug Company is a member of GoodWeave, an organization that strives to eliminate child labor and to create fair working conditions in the foreign carpet trades. Maintaining traditional artisan practices and contributing to the economy of Nepal are important missions that your rug purchases can support.

One of the most interesting parts that they only show a very briefly is how the idea goes from someone's mind to being implemented. That piece of graph paper they show being drawn on is the blue print for the entire rug. Each square represents a a single know in the rug. It's like a giant color by numbers.
I'm astounded by the work and skill involved. I never really thought about it before. Thanks for this post!
Not all rugs are made the same:
Have a look at this Pottery Barn video, showing "Gun-Tufting" - a much faster and cheaper process than woven rugs (also depicted):
