Tripp Trapp designer Peter OpsvikPeter Opsvik conceived the idea for an adjustable chair that would grow with a child in 1972 when his 2-year-old son outgrew his high chair and he wondered: what next? The chair he designed was unveiled to the world that year at the Sjølyst Exhibition, but only three were sold.
Marketed as "ergonomically correct", it was marketed to children as well as adults and was advertised as "striking a blow for Norwegian backs". Over the next 40 years, 8 million were sold to families around the world. It was recently included in MoMA's exhibit Century of the Child: Growing by Design.
