Rustic farmhouse style is a simpler and more utilitarian take on that country cottage feel. Fill a home materials that endure the times and don't require much upkeep, and they will last for ever: leather sofas, organic cotton bedding, large farmhouse tables, exposed wooden beams, wide plank hardwood floors, and solid medal sinks.
Above are some specimens of rustic farmhouse-style spaces from each room of the house:
Kitchen: Painted cupboards are more easily refinished than the stained wood variety. Solid wood, and inset doors are easier to repair than those euro styled hinges. Look for butcher block or tiled counter tops, farm house or drainboard sinks and plenty of baking supplies. What better way to warm up the house during the winter than by baking some bread in that old oven.
Dining Room: Companies specialize in farm house dining tables for a reason: large, solid wood tops shows their age, individuality, and authenticity. They're indefinitely refinishable, and all that's required for upkeep is a little wax every now and then. It is the centerpiece of the rustic farmhouse living space, the meeting place after a hard days work and a place of nourishment at mealtime.
Living Room: White shades and curtains keep the light out, while they're easily laundered when needed. Leather sofas are easier to clean, more comfortable and look better with time. A wood stove burning stove is a bonus for heating the space and drying out clothes after a run in the rain or hard days work in the garden.
Bathroom: Pedestal sinks and free standing tubs give a roomier feel. Whites and off whites are spruced up with some color here and there, but simple is always better.
Bedroom: Strong, solid furniture with exposed grain - a beefy framed bed topped with organic cotton bedding (also gets better with age) and a plush down comforter to keep you warm through the chilly nights. Wide plank flooring, wood paneling and paneled ceilings add texture to the otherwise bland room.
Home Office: The desk is a place to work but also a reminder of places you've been and things that are important to you in your life. A comfortable chair, and a desk that will last the test of time are a must (Shown below is the Aris Desk from Pottery Barn).
