Simple, beautiful and unique. These are the easiest words to describe the Ledge desk from Seattle-based furniture design and build company Urbancase. Their philosophy is to create objects that contribute to a simpler, pared back lifestyle focused on basic aesthetic elements and functionality. What more do you need?
Designed to be installed directly onto a wall (they provide an excellent installation video at their website), the Ledge ($1500 with shipping) measures 42 inches long by 18 inches deep. It's made from Walnut or MDF but the material required to produce the desk is very minimal. Urbancase says they mind the environment with everything they do and make informed decisions about the materials and methods they use.
The Ledge includes a discreet cord management system, drawer, and pullout shelf/work surface and can be used as a desk or a stereo/media cabinet, as shown below:
Introduced in May, their 2010 collection has already received praise from media including GQ. An optional floating shelf includes adjustable aluminum shelves and bungees for envelope storage. it also holds DVDs, albums, or CDs. There's even a promotional video for the Ledge:

This has nothing to do with the desk, but where can I get that letter e? I've been looking for cool oversized, wall mounted letters for a long time, but still haven't found any to my satisfaction. This appears to fit the bill.
$1500!?
I'm enamored with the shelf desk concept, but that price seems a bit excessive.
I've seen some really elegant DIY solutions on Lifehacker.

Not permissible on my budget, but very handsome indeed.
Alright, did some (very cursory) shopping around, and $1500 is just way too much. A steel desk similar to this would only cost $200.
And looking at more of urbancase's products: $450 for an LED desk lamp!? $175 for a wool military surplus blanket?
Promoting brands like these is the reason "being green" is something that's perceived as being for overpaid hipsters.
I picked up a very similar desk (with legs) from the Treasure Mart in Ann Arbor. Looks like all I need to do to save $1420 is carefully saw off the legs, remove the drawers to run long screws through the back and into studs then BAM! DIY Class on the CHEAP!
SKPhoto816... it'd be nice to see the end result (and how to?) lol
It is incredible to me how expensive "simplification" is. I think I will keep my old, inefficient, drawer-filled desk.
Way overpriced.
