If you simply don't have the room or the space for a full sized hood, then maybe it's worth checking out downdraft hoods. These are perfect for a vast number of situations.
This downdraft exhaust system is by Viking Europe, and it basically does what you think it does. Instead of sucking air above the cooking range into the hood, this thing just sucks it down. It's an interesting solution to the quandary of how to set up a hood when you run out of space. These types of systems are ideally suited for kitchen islands, homes with very high ceiling, or people who just don't like stuff hanging over their ranges, no matter how stunning they look.
What's even cooler, is that this downdraft range hood just disappears into the counter when it's not in use, making it kind of awesome. It looks really nice, since there aren't any visible screws or welds. The EVIPR900R Viking downdraft exhaust system quiet due to the way it works. There is no word yet on price or availability, however we've spotted these types of downdraft hoods for around $700 to $1,300.

These look really great but I am not sure how well they work. A recent episode of This Old House revisited a couple who had had their home done. In their regrets they said one was the downdraft exhaust system which wasn't efficient at all. They had chosen this as the cooktop was in an island and they wanted to keep the look clean.
They work decently (not great), but a big problem is the exhausting/venting (our downdraft didn't vent out, just recycled the air) and more importantly, the grease hits your cooktop as the greasy air is pulled down. Gets to be pretty messy.
We opted to build in a real vent hood, that was above and vented to the outside. MUCH nicer.
i have a jenn-air gas range with built-in downdraft & it works ok. not great, but it does the job.
