Our rental used to have old oak cabinets and ugly tiles. Luckily, we were able to paint the cabinets and walls and cover the tiles. It was a win-win for everyone! I wanted to create a bright space and a space that looks more spacious, I think it worked.

First we put up the wainscoting - we chose the individual boards instead of the already painted big panels. We used universal glue and it worked great! The finished backsplash received a few coats of primer and a few coats of latex paint, it's totally water resistant.

Next we started to paint the cabinets. I didn't do any sanding, it was wintertime and we didn't have the opportunity to do the sanding and painting outside. I got a high quality primer (two coats) and then I used my own chalk paint mix (two coats) and I finished the cabinets with a high quality wax. Everything worked great and I saved a ton of time as well. The paint isn’t chipping, no scratches, it's really durable!

I removed two cabinet doors, I added two white IKEA shelves, added two baskets and the whole look of the kitchen changed immediately. My original plan was to add some knobs and pulls, however I skipped the idea and kept it simple, since it was a rental, I didn't want to increase costs. One wall was painted black (chalkboard paint) and I put up a floating shelf. The old kitchen table and stools received a makeover as well. To finish the look I added a colorful fabric banner.
