As a design blogger, I can't help noticing certain trends in the images I pore through every day. Last week, while searching for images of beautiful modern canopy beds, one bed in particular kept popping up over and over. It's like the Eames chair of beds...simple, beautiful, modern, and seemingly ubiquitous.
If you have a sharp eye (or you shop at Ikea as much as I do), you've probably deduced that the world's most popular bed is the Ikea Edland. Sadly, the Edland appears to have been discontinued by Ikea (whyy??), but you may still be able to snag one on Craigslist, or from your local store if their inventory hasn't yet run out.

im so sick of plastic taxidermy. throw a mustache on it!
Interesting how image 11's bed helps the attic low ceiling seem cozy instead of oppressive.
Nice post...
The Edland really is a lovey bed. How the hell did Ikea decide to keep the Poang chair (seemingly for eternity) and ditch the Edland bed?
I've posted this elsewhere before, but I'll reiterate: I have the Edland and it's not very good quality. We did a solid job of putting it together, and yet over time it's become the most awfully squeaky bed I've ever experienced in my life. I would never buy it again, despite how pretty it is :(
I have it and love it. Maybe @EMINCHICAGO is using it too much for something oter than sleep... And totally agree with @ELANEB. The poang is so dated now and should have been discontinued years ago!! Nice post
If you are not going to use a canopy (or the adorable flower decoration), why would you have a plain rod over your bed? I'm sorry, but it looks like pvc pipe to me... :S Sorry...
@ELANEB - RIGHT!?
oh, and #6 - HBC love over here. <3
I have an Ethan Allen pencil four poster bed I purchased on Craig's list 3 year's ago. I have intended to make it into a canopy bed but have moved into a small bedroom and have been concerned that putting on a canopy will make the bed overwhelm the room. Seeing these ideas, especially the one with the lights, have given me the idea needed to complete my beautiful bed. Can't wait to put this all together.
The pictures of the yellow bed (and, I suspect, also the brown bed) are actually an older IKEA version, back when it was made of solid wood and part of the Hemnes series. Parts of the Edland were made out of pressboard instead, making it a bit lower quality than the original bed. May be the reason for the stability issues @EMINCHICAGO mentioned. I've had my yellow IKEA bed for over three years now, had to re-tighten all the screws once, and it has held up to plenty of "activities". I love this bed.
I knew you would have Sherry & John's "Ed the Bed"!
i'm bummed they discontinued it... that was one of the options (my fav) for my daughters big-girl bed.
Why, oh, why wasn't/isn't this made ... and in a King size, please?! We've always lived in small spaces, but relish our king sized bed. Boo hoo.
I'll stick with my sleigh bed.
@madampince - too funny!!!
Pretty sure YHL took the top bars off and put finials on the end of the posts.
They discontinued all poster beds overseas where I am, and I GRIEVED I tell you. I don't think Europeans, and I guess other world citizens go for that look much. I love it and wanted it and don't like the bed I settled for. 'cause it was that or sleep on the floor.
This bed is really pretty, and I actually wanted to buy it. But I get why they discontinued it - the quality sucks. It's so flimsy, it's sad. I didn't know there had been a previous encarnation of the Edland. It looks even prettier, actually. Maybe Ikea are working on a new and (truly) improved canopy bed?
I have this bed. And I love it. It is made of wood. And even better...it's made in Poland. No Polish jokes please!
And quality so far has been great!
Hm... I just don't care for this bed. It seems unfinished to me, and I don't care for how it breaks up the open space in a room. I like a low slung bed. I am petite and climbing into even a bed of a normal height just isn't for me.
I can't believe it's discontinued. I should buy a back-up Edland! Image #13 links to my blog, and since writing that post I have bought and been using the bed. It's gorgeous, I feel like a princess every single night! I have a very, I mean very heavy latex mattress on it and maybe because of the weight the frame does squeak when you jump on it, if you know what I mean. While lying in it I love the extra height, one downside is that I had a hard time finding a beside table that looks good in proportion to it. Now I have a 3-step Bekvam stepladder next to it serving as a bedside table and it looks fab.
I hope they release a new and improved version because I don't ever want to go back to a non-poster bed.
I know, I love this bed! <3
Oh, how I love #11! Only I would use the desk as a vanity instead.
My hubby and I were both attracted to the Edlund, but it just seemed to flimsy for us. (We're not the smallest of people these days.) Shame. I really like the clean lines. I remember the Hemnes version being much sturdier. We're currently in the market for a platform bed.
I drove 2hours to Ikea this weekend to purchase this bed, however I found it had been discontinued after a week before the website had it listed for sale at my local store. I was so upset and I have been searching everywhere for this bed! I cant find any for sale on craigslist. Im so upset b/c this piece is so pretty and affordable since i just spent 800$ for the hayworth dresser at pier one. Those two pieces would of went great together. Why did Ikea discontinue there hottest bed???
I had my husband build a canopy frame to fit around our queen-sized ensemble bed (one of those base-and-mattress beds) years ago. It's been in storage and I've just dug it out and am painting it white. Love this post - totally inspired by all the possibilites of decorating the canopy once I finish! Thanks AT!
I have this bed in full size. I've had it for six years. It proved to be surprisingly sturdy and really good looking. I am not a tiny person and neither is my partner. I use it with slats and no box spring. It is very similar to shaker four poster beds (not as refined but definitely similar). I really love how high it is off the floor.
Alas, I am selling mine this weekend, I bought a house and my new bedroom will hold a larger bed. I will miss my Edland, I always wanted a four poster bed and this one was so affordable and still looks great.
Only in Canada...IKEA being a main feature in a national design magazine. Alas, quality furniture isn't a strong suit here in the great white north. Having bought (and returned within 3 days) an IKEA bed before, I can say that based on their other beds, @eminchicago's remarks ring true. I can totally see this being made out of pressboard, since IKEA's other beds seem to be. I have a nice mattress (natural latex) -- no way I'd put it on IKEA. The cheap pressboard would collapse!
