With all the hustle and bustle already underway, our bedroom is going to be a haven when the going gets tough this holiday season. And while our current bedroom doesn't have all the traditional Zen decor qualities, there are certain things we can do to make our space feel calm and relaxed.
- Introducing blues and greens will cool off the space, giving the bedroom more of a calming vibe.
- Make it a goal to pick up clothes at the end of every day. Return belongings to their proper homes so you'll awake to a non-cluttered environment. An easy way to ensure this will happen is using hooks in the bedroom or an S-hook in the closet.
- Just by making the bed everyday, your bedroom will appear larger (and cleaner) without lifting a cleaning product.
- Move a plant (or two) into the space for cleaner air and an overall charm factor.
- Most Feng Shui experts will tell you to skip under-the-bed storage. To keep the flow, purge the space for a lighter feeling bedroom. Not to mention, it'll be easier to keep the space underneath the bed clean when you've got nothing stored below.
- It seems that most of these Zen bedrooms practice using symmetry in the space. Two matching lamps or even mismatched bedside tables feels harmonious.
- If you can swing it without compromising privacy, sheer curtains go a long way in opening up a cramped space and allows tons of light to ooze in.

Nice tips, and I love the idea of bringing more calm into the bedroom - but I need my under bed storage space! And every other sneeky bit of double-purpose space-saving furniture and storage space I have.
I've read that Feng Shui "tenet" many times and it always gives me a little twinge. I acknowledge the theory of flowing chi, but I think I (and most people) sleep better when my stuff is organized, folded, and protected in nice boxes, even if they're under the bed, than when my stuff is everywhere, piled up, looming...
Inspiring peaceful designs, except that last bedroom (x2) is more goth than zen!
I made it a priority to clear the area under my bed - and it does feel better in there - plus I painted the walls a soothing agave blue (they were a harsh light peach ~cringe~) and I added a plant - very calming.
I love that picking up your clothes is a decorating tip.
I adore that last one but alas my husband would never get all his crap into the wardrobe on a daily basis. The only nod to Zen in my bedroom is the fact that we sleep on a piece of latex and a futon rather than a conventional mattress.
When everything is clean and in its place, I think my bedroom has a definite Zen feeling and look. Can't seem to maintain it for long. Pretty soon there are piles of books, a few pairs of shoes and other odds and ends that haven't yet made it into the drawers.
I love that last bedroom. It looks like a little shrine.
