Have you ever looked at a room that you thought was 'done' and thought... something just isn't right here? There are all kinds of different elements that can make a room feel beautiful and comfortable and complete, but this list is a good place to start. If you have a space that feels like it needs a little extra something, consider adding one of these six things.
A little bit of texture.
I can't stop talking about how important texture is to spaces, but that's because I think texture is really, really important. A few bumpy or rough or weathered things add interest and a sense of comfort to a space. Here are five ways you can add texture to a room.
A bit of contrast.
A room where everything matches is a boring room. If the room is full of heavy furniture, a more delicate piece can lighten things up; if all your furniture is new, some vintage elements will help to keep things interesting. Or try adding a single piece in an unexpected color.
The right lighting.
People often ignore lighting, thinking of it as a bit of an afterthought, but it can have such a huge impact on the feel of a room. Every room should have, at the very least, two light sources, so you can adjust the light levels to suit your mood and the time of day.
If your windows are naked, or if you're just getting by with those standard-issue apartment blinds, you're missing a huge opportunity. Window treatments help control light levels, add a little softness, and emphasize one of the best features of the space.
When decorating, most people tend to err on the side of Not Enough Art... and really, can you ever have enough art? Pay attention to proportions, too — too-small art, or a bunch of tiny pieces grouped together, can make a room feel choppy and unfinished.
A little bit of life.
Whether it's a plant, of a botanical print, or flowers, or even a furry friend, a little bit of nature can be just the right way to add the finishing touch to a space.
