FastCo.Design and Porsche invited designers from around the globe to look to the iconic Porsche 911 and use the automobile as inspiration for just about anything else ("smaller than a living room and bigger than a purse" was the only guideline). The Porsche Next Design Challenge winner has been announced, and the top prize went to Junggi Sung's hair dryer above...Sung was chosen from a final 7 finalist, picked from 430 initial entries from an esteemed panel of judges chosen by Porsche and FastCo.DESIGN:
Jens Martin Skibsted, cofounder of the design firm KiBiSi as well as the high-end bike company Biomega; Dror Benshetrit, founder of Studio Dror, which has designed everything from luggage to sneakers to lounge chairs, for clients including Puma and Cappellini; and Grant Larson, Porsche's exterior designer, who has been the mind behind Porsche's most important brand extensions of the last two decades, the Boxster and Panamera, and has also led designers for the Carrera GT and the 911 Carrera and Turbo.
Sung's hair dryer one not only by the tactile and visual quality of its gear shift style controls, but also the audio component: the unit is imagined to reproduce engine roar of a 911! Whether we see this design come to life as a real world product is yet to be seen, but Porsche design loving types can already purchase one of their co-branded hard drives or BlackBerry Porsche Design P'9981.
