House Tour Update: Thomas' New Bedroom

We posted Thomas' small Washington DC studio last month - House Tour: Thomas' Washingtonian Address - and Thomas sent us an update for bedroom month:

"Recently, I purchased a new Dwell duvet and shams from one of my favorite local stores called "And Beige". I already had Pottery Barn sheets set along with a couple of chocolate brown Ikea pillows. By the suggestion of a friend-the owner of "And Beige", I painted the wall behind my bed chocolate brown-same color but in matte finish. I taped it off and decided not to paint the entire wall behind the bed. I wanted to give a headboard illusion. It looks great. The bedding really pops while complimenting the couch that sits in front of the bed."...

Thomas has rearranged his furniture a lot — we had to check the original slideshow to confirm this. If you remember, the head of his bed is inside the old closet. The new matte brown "headboard" is a great addition. The combination of the uniform lighting and uniform color scheme really helps to unite the small space. And we're digging the karate chopped pillows! (we're going to add a new tag for them!)

I'd love to see a piece of art that incoporates reds and maybe a cerulean blue. I like the headboard effect of the recessed wall. Is it hard to make the bed? love the silver lamp, too.

Lisa Hunter, the picture is deceiving as the bed is not much of an eyesore. It blends in well with the medium oak wood floors. To be honest, I have considered painting it as it is just an Ikea base. I am thinking high gloss lacquered white. Suggestions?

Kimg924, thank you for your suggestion. I think I might hang a piece of my artwork above the bed. I have no trouble making the bed. There is a nice space between the sofa and bed.

Thomas, beautiful! I also have a couple of those chocolate brown pillows from Ikea and they have lasted and still look great after two years of daily use on my couch--a great Ikea find!

BobbiH: I got the lamps from a local store in DC called Rkndy (Rock Candy). It is in the U street area. The store owner told me that he got them from a place in NYC.

I love it but some art over the bed would be nice too. I have a question though why do people 'bend' their cushions like Chinese fortune cookies? It looks so trite and overstyled.

You can find similar lamps at Crate and Barrel (or could, don't know if they still carry them), although I love to support the independent shops downtown. I just wish And Beige was a little more affordable overall.

ArabellaLondon, thank you for your suggestion relating to artwork and comments about my space. To answer your question: "why do people bend their cushions like Chinese fortune cookies?" To me, I go back and forth...sometimes I like the "karate chop" look for a hotel chic feel and then other times, I go for a more relaxed look. Yep, I moved the sofa right smack in the middle of the studio. In my previous arrangement, upon entering the studio, the first thing you saw was the bed. Now, you see the great couch.

The bistro table is directly across from the couch next to the entry way. It fits perfectly and does not affect the flow of the set up.

Am I seeing two different wall colors, or is it being reflected differently by the mirror with the natural lighting? Would you mind telling us what the paint is? It looks great.

The wall behind the bed is "chocolate" from restoration hardware in a matte finish. Instead of buying a can from Restoration, I took the color swatch to a local hardware store (I only needed a small can). I am sure the color is slightly off which I expected and wanted. The other two walls are the true Restoration Hardware "chocolate" paint. The finish has got a little more shine to it.

My two best friends (V and Char) from Atlanta were visiting and we went shopping at U Street. I had seen the lamps before but wasn't sure if they would work with my space. V and Char pushed me to get them and I am so glad that I did. We walked across the street, bought light bulbs and ran to my studio to set them up. Great memory!

Love the color scheme! I too think you should paint or stain the bed frame- I can envision either white or a dark brown, but do find the current tone jarring.

I also want to see just ONE bright red in there - maybe a photo of a red chili over the bed (prob'ly bad feng shui! LOL) but something, to feed the hungry eye?

i already got an orange painting on the opposite wall so I might continue that theme right above the bed.
