Q: I really love the CB2 Peekaboo Clear Coffee Table, especially for the price. The reviews seem to be overwhelmingly positive in terms of the looks of the table but it's also obvious that scratches are the major issue. Is it possible to get rid of the scratches once they appear? What's the best method and how much does it cost (in terms of time and money)? What do folks think about this table, if you have it?

Z2 iPod Dock and Wi...
I have it, it looks great, and I love it. But I don't put a lot of stuff on it. Maybe a book or a magazine. It's in a very low traffic room in front of a love seat that I only use for reading. I'd love to know what would happen if I actually tried to accessorize it. I imagine I'd see some scratches, which is why I'm pretty careful.
Ever have a pair of lightweight/inexpensive glasses or sunglasses and notice how prone they are to scratching?
That's because they're made of acrylic - not glass or Lexan - and are prone to scratching.
I wouldn't waste my money - There are other tables that are more resistant to scratching.
I got the media console in acrylic for a coffee table. At first i thought it would be cheesy but i was desperate to try it since my living room is small and dark. i love it it works great and i have both traditional and modern stuff. it really is quite neutral. but it will scratch and show smears (like from my dog's nose). i don't worry about it since i have magazines in baskets underneath.
i have both the coffee table and the console table. it is not that hard to scratch them up, so i wouldn't use it in a space that gets a lot of wear and tear. only use a moist paper towel to clean it. i unfortunately learned that lesson too late.
with all that said, i love the pieces and as dkeastbay said, it is neutral and can go with any look.
There's a line of cleaning products, made for Lucite products, called Novus that allegedly will get rid of scratches. I don't know how it would do that, other than filling them in with something, but I'd think it'd be noticeable. I have their basic spray cleaner, which I use only occasionally on a small Z-shaped side table (on which I put only little, lightweight things, like a book or tissues); most of the time I just give it a quick dusting with a clean microfiber cloth. The one rule about Lucite/plexi/acrylic items is to never use Windex and such on them--those cleaning products will make the items yellow prematurely.
I own this table and I love it! I live in a studio so it gets plenty of use (reading, candles, laptop, meals, etc). Yes it does scratch but to be honest I don't really notice it. They are really tiny scratches not really large ugly ones that stand out. Hope this helps!
I own the 3 nesting tables like this and haven't noticed any scratching. Love them. Though I also have 2 young kids and 2 large dogs so maybe the fingerprints and drool are covering them up.
Novus does work very well for acrylic. It's made to do to acrylic what buffing does to car scratches. It breaks down the acrylic slightly and redistributes it back into the scratch. Dries instantly.
I would think you could get a sheet of actual glass cut to fit the top with the edges sanded smooth at any glass company. It would add a subtle extra layer you might not want, but it would also protect soft acrylic from scratching. (Just a thought...)
Novus is good for occasional fix-ups, but for routine cleaning I highly recommend Brillianize. It seems to me to reduce future scratches, and makes acrylic shine... brilliantly. I'm quite addicted.
we have it too. it's in our busy 5 person family living room. it's constantly smudged and easily scratched. it also reflects like all get out! the sun coming through the windows bounces off and is blinding. we actually have to move it every day for a while so it's not shining in anybody's eyes. when it's clean it's very cool and so far, our two year old sitting on it hasn't broken it....
I bought acrylic nesting tables at an estate sale so I wasn't the one to get the first scratches, which is nice...no dreading them! It fits in with my other perfectly imperfect possessions. I keep moving them because they look great everywhere!
I have it and love it. In addition to putting drinks (and my laptop and a remote control) on it all the time, my kids feel the need to put their toys all over it. Sure - it doesn't look as perfect as it was but I can barely see the scratches.
i've had this coffee table for about 5 years, and actually use it -- the scratches, sadly, are *TERRIBLE* and the table looks cloudy and in poor shape. I'd buy a glass one.

maybe this glass table will work better.
Just a warning if you can't use windex to clean these, just a little bit of soapy water. Windex makes lucite fog over time.
Is anyone else reminded of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer makes a coffee table out of a windsheild?
agree with elih. after two years with mine, it's scratched up terrible and gets dirty very easily. i'd much rather have invested in a glass table.
Container Store sells a trio of the novus cleaning/polishing cleaners someone above mentioned. $9.99. It's what most retail stores use to keep acrylic shelving clean and scratch free - I think the stuff is amazing and I use it on an acrylic catch-all tray I have. I definitely recommend it for cleaning and buffing scratches away.
I have the console version of this table. I use it in my bedroom for a vanity. It gets lots of use, and as of late my cat has decided it is a perfect jumping off spot to get onto my dresser. It has it's share of scratches, however I use Pledge or Olde English or other wood polish on it and it really makes the scratches less noticable. I don't regret the purchase especially for the price and the overall effect it the room is exactly what I wanted so I would certainly purchase this item again.
Would I purchase the coffee table? I use my coffee table for everything, eating, playing scrabble, putting my feet up, so no this would not be a good choice for me, but if you have less traffic, it might be just fine for you.
I own a few items from CB2 and for the most part love them all. However, be weary of the 'overwhelmingly positive' reviews on the site... I had a negative review deleted because 'it did not meet one or more of our established Guidelines.'
