Threading toys are as good for building motor coordination as they are for keeping your child occupied in the car or waiting for the hair dresser. We particularly like these simple wooden versions made in Lithuania (and available in the U.S.) by Estia Holzspielwaren.

Each animal is attached to a cord with a wooden threader so you won't have to worry about losing it. Kids can thread randomly are make a game of it (by filling in each loop without crossing the thread for example).

In addition to the squirrel, penguin and horse, Estia also makes a butterfly and rabbit. Each toy costs around $10 and is available here.
