Kilims, dhurries, and Persian rugs abound in home decor these days, and in particular, they've invaded the kitchen. Veronica, from the blog My Hands Made It, loved this look but didn't love the price tag or the anxiety that accompanies having a nice rug in a messy kitchen. So she took matters into her own hands.
With an old seagrass rug, paint, and some patience, Veronica created her own version of a Persian rug. The look is chic, and the results are arguably more practical for the space. And what's more, given that slightly worn Persian rugs are some of the most desirable, there's a chance that the painted version will look even more authentic if the paint wears over time.

Whoa. Very cool. I wonder how the paint will hold up, though. Acrylic I imagine would flake pretty quickly.
Slightly OT but maybe you guys can help. Is there a good source online for vintage suzanis? The Uzbek-based companies kinda make me worry because both shipping and returns won't be feasible or easy, and of course any kind of retailer (like Jayson Home and Garden) will mark up the suzani by 100x. Thanks!
I LOVE the idea of handpainting an inexpensive rug to make it more chic and luxurious. Persian's not my style, but I'm definitely tucking this idea away for when I move soon.
@ARCHDARLING, try here (£25 for a vintage cushion cover) Bazaar House. They're based in the UK.
Saraih, wow, many thanks! I appreciate it.
ARCHDARLING, try our friends at Matt Camron Rugs in Houston, Tx at www.mattcamron.com
ArchDarling, I actually have 5 amazing suzanis for sale! I was going to use them with a client, but we went in a different direction. You can see 'em here:

$200 each and I'll ship them to you however you'd like :)
A girlfriend of mine used to work for an interior designer...all she did ALL DAY LONG was paint rugs like this. She was a really talented artist and some of them were amazing, as far as I can remember she did use acrylic paints.
@ARCHDARLING, this may be a stupid question but have you checked ebay?
I've found loads of vintage textiles there.
Wow! Thanks for the responses, everybody! I'm off to check out your links...
Madame Suggia, not a stupid question at all... I know you can find everything on ebay! I kinda hate ebay since the big redesign, so I barely bother trying to browse anymore. I know, I know.
what an amazing idea...i love it!! i'm so sharing this with people to show how some people are so super talented...you're a genius...good luck!
