Just wanted to share our gutter garden, which we built three years ago and replanted on Earth Day (inadvertently).
I did a post on it and how to build it against an existing fence on my blog. The materials (8'-0" gutter (cut), hardware, caps, etc. are outlined in the post. We have very little outdoor space to call our own, so this was a fun project for us.
You can find out more about the progress of the gutter garden on Tiffanie's blog.
Thanks, Tiffanie!

Shaw's Original Fir...
We love outdoors projects, please post similar artcles more often!
Only thing I'd be worried about is what metal those gutters are made out of, and if there's anything coming out of it that might end up in the plants you consume.
Good question, SUNSPOT42. Galvanized metal is dipped in zinc. Zinc is not harmful to humans in the kind of quantity, if any that might end up in the edibles. I think it was good you brought this up, though. If there was something very acidic in the soil it might start to break down the zinc and metal in an unhealthy way, but hopefully that is not the case here.
Really great, I love it! Are there holes drilled in the bottoms for drainage?
I'm a Tiffany, also growing lettuces and nasturtiums in gutters, on the tops of my wooden balcony railings in BC, Canada. Tiff's with gutter gardens are in fact all the rage. :)
Interesting that they're dipped in zinc. I'd be worried about other contaminants apart from zinc. There's a lot of freakishly low-quality crap pumping out of China these days.
