What I Love About My Small Home:
I love this apartment because of the high ceilings, natural light, exposed brick, and bedroom alcove. Because of the bedroom alcove, there is a practical separation of space between the sleeping and the living area. Thanks to the high ceilings, I was able to utilize the vertical space on the walls as focal points for art and decor. Drawing the eye upwards tricks the mind and makes the space feel loftier than it is. I also love the area by the bay windows. I work from home and enjoy people-watching throughout the day. The hustle and bustle of the streets is a great juxtaposition from the soft color palette and textures that I incorporated into my space to make it feel serene.
Three of My Best Tips and Tricks for Creating a Successful Small Space::
Get resourceful! My apartment has VERY LITTLE closet space. Recently, I discovered that with two tension rods and a bath curtain rod, I could create my own makeshift closet in the foot-deep windowsill in my bedroom alcove. Now, my entire wardrobe fits there perfectly. Also, decorate mindfully. Almost every piece of art and decor in my home has sentimental value. The portrait of a couple kissing on the brick wall is of my grandparents in 1939. The small pieces of artwork on my wall were given to me by a stippling artist that I met on a plane. Finally, make practical furniture choices. It's very easy to buy furniture just because it's stylish. Make sure that even the fanciest chair in your apartment is ridiculously comfortable, because you will be sitting it in a lot! In a small space nothing should be "just for show."
