We just checked out a house today that has the most incredible custom clay tile flooring in the kitchen, dining room, and entry. It inspired us to look around for more examples of such beautiful clay tiles that we feel a little guilty treading upon:
None of these are the actual tiles we saw at the house, but we wanted to gather them here as a reminder of the beautiful material and to recognize its potential use in the home. Does anyone have similar clay tiles in their home? How do you like them?
• 1 handmade unsealed terra cotta used in an exterior application, from Aeria Country Floors
• 2 an amazing stairway finished in the Debris Series tile from Fireclay
• 3 handmade clay floor tiles at the George Washington Smith home by Barro Nica
• 4 Colonial Clay handmade tile pavers by Ken Mason Tile

What beautiful tiles! I love the mosaic risers.
Although nothing matches the warmth of Satillo and other red clay tiles, their relative softness and porosity can be a problem in a high traffic area. I compromised with highly fired porcelain tile made to resemble terra cotta.

Six years in, and I'm positive that I would have been patching and cleaning like crazy had used red clay. Still, in an outdoor or more rustic context, I'd go Satillo.
Beautiful! We are looking for Moroccan shaped (I don't know what else to call it...) clay tiles. If anyone finds them... point me in the right direction!
We have original hand-painted quarry tile from when our house was built back in 1934.

We absolutely love it. It's beautiful, has tons of character, and obviously lasts a long time.
