What: Black and White Basket Weave Tile
Where: Meeting House Restaurant, Amagansett, NY
Why: We really like this classic pattern for kitchens and dining areas in particular. The cool thing about the pattern is the way in which the black and white rectangles create an illusion of a curving basket and takes the edge off a harsh geometric look...

Wow, I have this tile in my bathroom! I have always liked it, although it is old (original to the 1936 house).
It's very cool. Is it in panels?
That's awesome.
My apartment building has this tile in the bathroom as well- I've always loved it!
i've got it too....one bathroom in b/w and the other in a yellowish and black
I comes on sheets I saw it at Southampton Brick and tile.. I didn't use it but they have it there..And they are super nice... In case you have to have it, take the Jitney to Southampton, and then bring it back with you!!!
Michael S Smith for Ann Sacks is the only version of this tile I have seen and it is pricey. There must be another tile company that manufactures this pattern at a more affordable price point. Does anyone have a resource?
Think of the person who had to stick that all on the mesh--and cut the pieces out first. THAT's why it's pricey.
I priced this at another store in Manhattan - I think it was $89 a sq. ft. I want it for exactly the reasons Maxwell featured it - but not at that price.
There is currently a seller on ebay offering lots, including 200 sq feet for USD 1980, with free shipping to the US (seems to be a canadian seller). If believe that works out to $9.90 a sq ft.

Smaller lots are a bit more expensive, but still reasonable. 50 sq feet is $648 (again, free shipping to US), which is $13 a sq ft. The ebay store is:

I believe build direct only sells to the trade, but they have white on white and the same black on white as pictured for $16.47 sq ft

Also, try cool tiles (www.cooltiles.com).
They have couple of options in the $25 per sq ft range.

These are all great resources. Thank you to all who provided links.KaanSWFM, I appreciate craftsmanship above price and have no problem paying more for material when it is warrented. However, in the case of the Michael S Smith basket weave tile, the outrageous price is for his name, marketing and GPM, not the labour and time that went into making the tile.
I hear Maestro Mosiacs has a great selection and good prices despite them not publishing them on the website

I was thinking about using this as a kitchen backsplash... is that crazy?
I love basketweave mosaic tiles, and found many at discount tile source: www.missionstonetile.com in Nashville, TN.
Also, found an on online source at www.premierstyleflooring.com
There are a lot of choices for basketweave Carrara definatly the Walker Zanger and Ann Sacks have great quality but the price for the brand and then the additional cost for the stores that has to be added onto the product makes it in the $30 range and a 100SF job costs $3,000. This was not a problem in 1999/2000. However now I have spent time looking at samples from the 3 of largest online ecommerce retailers - firstly buy a sample $10-$15 - best investment. I have collected samples from the above and www.BuildersDepotDirect.com and Walker Zanger and I can almost say with upmost certainty that the Builders Depot Direct Basketweave for $11.50SF is coming from the same factory as the Ann Sacks product - but for a fraction of the cost. Mosaics just ship well FedEx and of course no sales tax the savings are not hundreds but thousands of dollars and with getting a sample from BuildersDepotDirect there is no risk.
Sorry all forgot to include the actual link to the Basketweave on BuildersDepotDirect:

You can buy samples for just $2.00 each and they ship same day. Ships FedEx ground almost anywhere in the USA for $1.00SF - so bascially you get premium Carrara Basketweave mosaic for $12.95SF delivered.
I did find one other site cheaper, is was 'Stone Buy Experts' or somrthing like that - cannot find them online now. They were offering Carrara Basketweave for $9.95SF delivered, incredible. I ordered a sample - I would forget about it, the product was barely even 5mm thick, you would have to raise the height of the subfloor or wall if you inteneded to use the product alongside any Carrara tile and it was a very grey mosaic. 4mm thick mosaics will not match in height with any Carrara field tile and at just 4mm the grout will be prone to cracking. The Marble Institute does not recommend 3/8" thick marble for nothing.
You will save $4SF of the product and pay $7SF more trying to create the correct installation.
I have read through the Builders Depot Direct site and they sound like they have done everything to create the lowest possible price without compromising quality (I just want others to use them because I use them all the time and I need them to keep selling!) Visit them here for other mosaics as well:
