Although some of our readers might have full backyards and expansive decks for gardening, others might only have a window. Not even a window box, mind you, just a window. How do you garden for real without the full outside sun? Well, you put on your McGyver hat on and get to work, that's what!
Having lived in apartments that don't lend themselves to to gardening, even the small space container kind, my jaw hit the floor when I ran across this amazing tilt out garden seen over at Make recently.
It's the perfect solution for those who would like fresh items for their kitchen, like herbs, but don't get enough sun to keep them happy. It was created by the Paris-based design and architecture firm BarreauCharbonnet. Want to see how it was made?
It's hands down the coolest thing I've seen all week, but maybe I'm just geeking out on behalf of all those folks who had given up the idea of gardening that might now have a shot at creating something for their own space.

White Enamel Flatwa...
I'm sorry that seems completely illegal and dangerous. What if it fell on someones head, wouldnt it drip nastiness on people when you watered it?
How do you shut the window?
Looks dicey. Maybe better to explore the potential for rooftop gardening?
@ Amandarh - Air conditioners fall out of windows and leak condensation onto walkers-by, yet they're not illegal.
I'm not undermining the potential danger of this invention. Just putting out a reminder that people have long utilized risky devices to modify/modulate/transform/enhance their living environment. Much like Rose123, I think the idea has potential with far reaching benefits. Think about the possibility of more people having the opportunity to grow their own produce, boosting the quantity of locally grown food. Or even the possibility of growing more robust houseplants, which have been shown to elevate well-being and reduce stress levels. If one views this as a proof-of-concept prototype, I think the risky and impractical kinks could be worked out of it in subsequent design iterations, and eventually a real life installation of the Tilt Out Window Garden would deflect worry.
This is so imaginative! I love it.
@Amandarh: People put AC units in their windows all the time (completely legal). To me this seems much more securely attached to the window. And you could water the plants while in vertical position and catch the water.
@ Terry in Silver Springs: The video shows that you can pull the "garden" up into a vertical position. I assume with some tweaking you could make sure the window closes while in the vertical position.
@Rusty Patina: I know there are many apartment dwellers who do not have access to a rooftop.
I Agree with Rose 123, I think this has a lot of potential.
I love the concept, but I worry about bugs/birds/squirrels just strolling right in that open window! Needs a few more tweaks to be perfect.
It's awesome! Very clever. Containers like this tend to dry out fast and any watering of it has to be done when it's pulled in clearly.
If my upstairs neighbor installed that thing and blocked the sunlight coming in my window, I would be super annoyed.
I don't think this is the answer for every apartment/small space dweller, but there are many places that this would work most excellently. I have lived in many apartments that had windows where I could have used this and it would not have blocked sunlight from neighbors below nor would it have endangered anyone passing underneath because there was was only vacant blocked off space below the window.
Great idea! Just use caution and confirm that is acceptable to the landlord or building supervisor prior to purchase.
I love it - very imaginative and creative idea!
The design and idea is great - really great!! - BUT as someone who lived in a lot of apartments and condos, there is no way that would be allowed in most buildings (at least in my neck of the woods). Not to mention the chances of you pissing off your neighbour below is quite high.
Air conditioners (1) aren't DIY projects, (2) are so heavy that people take extreme pains to ensure they're secure, (3) are often installed by professionals, (4) don't hang from cables, (5) don't feature moving parts and loose drop-in pots, (6) don't involve windows that are going to be opened and closed every day, (7) don't tempt kids to play with them as much as this contraption would, (8) ...
"Air conditioners (1) aren't DIY projects, (2) are so heavy that people take extreme pains to ensure they're secure, (3) are often installed by professionals..."
Um, what? News flash: I doubt that 1 in 10 AC's are even screwed into the window frame, much less "professionally installed". Most people just let the closed upper sash catch the flange on top of the unit and rely on the weight of the AC to hold it all together.
nice. Love it.
I've never personally seen an AC unit in a window that was professionally installed. Just saying. Most people install them themselves, and do so incorrectly.
Man, that photo gives me the heebie-jeebies.
I think I'd (maybe) resort to the illegal fire escape container gardening tradition before I went with the plants-on-a-trapeze invention. Then again, I don't want anyone's escape thwarted by my geraniums either. This is why it's hard to leave the SF Bay Area and my condo patio!
Wow, what a great idea! so what if a little plant water gets on ya as you walk by? Better than things coming from birds, air conditioners, etc.....I live on the 7th floor with no balcony and this is something very useful...
I like the idea. It makes me think about how to adapt it for my kitchen window. Only one side opens, and it opens by sliding left over the left-hand vertical pane. The screen is removable. Hmm...I like DIYs that suggest a way to do something I can adapt for my own circumstance. This post is "good to think with" (apologies to the great Claude Levi-Strauss.)
First glance at foto and immediately saw this was Someplace Europe- architecture, bi-fold/pocket shutters on window, no screen. So immediately knew that there would be the typical American "sky is falling" comments. And, sure enough, I was right! Dripping nastiness! (Sounds like a good porn title!) Bugs/birds/squirrels crawling/flying/scampering! (Damn Nature, and all Her children!) Flattened heads! (Three Stooges Live!) Blocked views! (not in MY backyard!) Good grief! Almost everything we use today had a prototype that would not work today, but through imagination, thinking outside the box, and adaptability, our everyday appliances work very well today and with little risk to health and safety. Think about the first car and the naysayers who shook their fists and ranted about "them damn horseless contraptions!" Well, you are all certainly married to your big gas guzzlers today! The first microwave ovens were as big as Buicks and everyone freaked out about the radiation and putting poodles in them to dry their hair. Now microwave ovens are found everywhere and only the clearly insane try to put their children in them! My point? It's JUST a window garden box people! It's just an IDEA that works very well and with a bit of ingenuity it could be adapted to fit anywhere. Obviously you've never been anywhere outside the US, where people regularly toss dish water out of upstairs windows into the street below. Along with other unwanted household waste- including philandering husbands. And I definately can not see how this would block someone's light or view! For crying out loud- our views are blocked by cell towers, utility poles, satellite dishes, billboards, highway over passes.... really can't imagine a thing barely 2' x 2' and 6" deep could block sunlight coming in a neighbor's window! Sheesh! Don't EVER hang a shelf up in your house! Or drive over a bridge. Step on cracks....
Calm down @Ecuadoriana1, not all Americans are cretins! I, for one, LOVE this, even though I live in a house and have a yard! Very nifty idea! (But like any installed modification, probably renters do need to have permission to use something like this.)
I think it's extremely cool...but might not want to be below it...haha.
I hope everyone could read my previous comment for the humor factor! I don't think all Americans are cretins, SHERRYBINNH (I am American, too- South American, that counts!). But the things I see people panicking about in the US are second nature behaviors in the rest of the world. From what I've seen, and I've done a fair amount of traveling in my time, only in the US do people panic about every little possibility of someone getting hurt/sued. A while back, here in AT, there was a foto of a nice little home office space, very pretty & well organized. I remember there were so many negative comments about the little shelf on the wall above the desk. Comments like: "What if there was an earthquake and the shelf fell on your head?!" I still crack up thinking about that!
I'd use it to extend that smoker as far out of my apartment as possible.
@ shantiquax- LOL!!!! Great idea! Better than mine. I just push them out of the window altogether. Your idea is less messy with the legal work involved.
I love the creativity involved in this. Though, whenever I see a gardening post on here, be it this one or ones that show you how to grow plants out of pallets, etc., all I can think is "man, these people are obviously not gardeners". Very little consideration seems to be given towards the variable growth habits and sizes of plants.
