Does the thought of tent camping cause you to be, well, less than enthused about braving the great outdoors? Ever crave a really good night's sleep when you're spending the night in the woods? Enter the teardrop camper. I saw these recently and was smitten.
These sweet pint-sized campers featured in Sunset are from Vacations In A Can; they enjoy bringing the "old" style of camping back and can tell you about the teardrop style's many benefits — less packing and better sleeping, to name a few!
A hatchback-style kitchen compartment in the back complements a full-sized bed in the main area, which also has storage in the form of a few cabinets and shelves. Another bonus — each side has a door, so you can slip out of the bed without waking your partner to make a sunrise pot of coffee in the back!

I picture escaping for a long weekend to a remote site in the woods; a good book, some strong coffee, a great bottle of wine, and a sturdy pair of hiking boots would all be on my packing list!

I adore these! They seem like the perfect thing that would let me go camping on a whim - no hours of packing or tons of setup upon arrival, just keep your camping stuff in there, hitch it up and go.
My neighbors have one of these and the outside is painted to look like a little bird! Cutest. Trailer. Ever. I wonder how much they cost?
Awww...... so cute.... I want one!
They are cute, but I would feel claustrophobic. And where do you change your clothing?? I think Ill stick with my giant tent, which only takes 5 minutes to put together :)
@caseyinto: changing clothes in a teardrop isn't that hard, and the advantage is that it offers a lot more protection from the elements, and a lot more comfort than your average tent camping. Plus there's the built-in kitchen in the back.
Such a classic and practical design. I love these things.
I love these. I never thought I'd want a camper, but these are just too cute. And would fit easily into a garage too.
Simple is best. This is great. I could imagine sleeping in my clothes so I can make a midnight trek to the porta potty or whatever is available at the site. I would think about bringing along a self supporting shower curtain and a solar shower. I ADORE the kitchen idea... nothing worse than trying to get damp firewood to light when all you want is a hot cup of joe!
I have adored these since I first saw them about a decade ago. I like the idea that you are not closed off from nature by a big, obnoxious vehicle. When I was little, we had a series of small campers and used them all the time, even on weekdays. Dad would come home from work, take the van or whatever to a local watering hole and my Mom could be comfortable sitting inside reading while we fished. When I got tired of fishing, I'd play with my dolls or color. It was wonderful. Now, it seems that everyone has to invest in gigantic homes on wheels and end up listing them on Craigslist not a year later because they never use them.
There are also some rolling eggs out of Canada that are just a little larger. I'm quite impressed with them, too. And I do love my own bathroom facilities - even more than my own kitchen. I can always survive on a sack of apples - not so with a public toilet.
The grammer police here would like to let you know that there is no verb form for enthusiastic, which is an adjective. There is no "enthuse" unlike infuse or diffuse. I know, its droppings occur everywhere, much like Magnin's pigeons.
The "grammer" police should know how spell grammar.
I would love to have one of these so we could go camping in style ;)
btw... "Enthuse" is a verb recognized by the Oxford Dictionaries and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary among others. It was rejected by some because it was created by back-formation, which is actually quite common in English grammar, and it has been in use since at least the early 19th century.

Hey grammer polece:
en·thuse
Verb:
Say something that expresses one's eager enjoyment, interest, or approval: "they both enthused over my new look".
Make (someone) interested and eagerly appreciative.
I'm 5'8 and my husband is 6'2". I could see this being perfect for me alone, but not a couple? Has anyone couple camped in one of these babies?
@ PARNASSUS
The first thing I did when I saw this post is look them up on Craigslist to see if someone around here is selling one. Turned out there were several, looks like mean price ~6000 dollars. There are different sizes, which I found interesting.
Anyway, these are SUPER cute and I love them. Oh! And the storage bit in the back means you can keep things safe while you sleep inside.
Having tried camping with both one of these and the aforementioned "egg trailer" I ended up buying a gorgeous vintage 1973 trillium trailer. They are cheaper, have a better layout for rainy climates and buying vintage/used means less use of non-renewable resources. That said, the less weight you town the less gas you use, so if you're camping in drier climates a teardrop may work for you.
Cute, but so expensive! For not much more I could get a used Class C RV and actually be able to stand!
Not to mention there's no way my car would be able to make it up a mountain pass towing one of those. :/ I'll stick with my tent or I just buy a proper RV. I'll take practical over cute, thanks.
I'm in love with this idea. sigh. Wonder how much a decent one would cost?
Genius.

There is a very large community of people that build their own Teardrop trailers. They have some free plans, and great pics of other trailers that have been built.
to answer some of the questions others have asked....
These can be built for much less than $6,000, and only take simple wood working skills.
Yes these can easily be towed with a small car and even some motorcycles, no need for a big vehicle.
The standard size is either 4ft or 5ft wide. The 5ft wide can accomadate a queen sized bed, and the interior height is usually between 4-5 high. Not as claustrophobic as you would think
these are very much like the old Scotti trailers....there's one at the organic market. love it!
These are fun but the problem, besides the price, is you have to unpack them to go to sleep. Check out http://www.cttct.com or http://www.dinoot.com for many solutions for compact camping without the hefty price tag and convenience, low cost (if you are willing to DIY or even a ready made) and sure to garner lots of interest at a campsite!
