After last month's scare, we are relieved to hear that this month's installment of the Alameda Point Antiques and Collectibles Faire is thankfully happening this Sunday. Whether it's your first time or your one hundredth, here are some tips to ensure you have a successful morning antiquing!SFGate recently ran a story full of tips for shopping at flea markets and antique fairs. Here's an overview of the tips along with some of my own:
Set your alarm. Gates open at Alameda at 6am which means an early arrival will have you competing with the professional antique fair goer. I would recommend getting there a closer 7am to allow that crowd to filter through. If you happen to over sleep and arrive later in the da, you might be able to snap some excellent deals.
Do your homework. Make a list of items you want/need to keep you on track. If you are looking for furniture, make sure you measure your space at home and bring measuring tape in order to measure the furniture at the fair.
Budget and bargain. I usually set a maximum amount I'm willing to spend on any item. Of course I will make exceptions if there is something fabulous, but for the most part I'm able to stay within that budget. This also makes it easier to bargain with vendors.
Carry on. Bring something to carry all the wonders you find. Wheeled carts will make your life much easier as will durable canvas bags.
Dress appropriately. Remember, it's easy to spend 5 hours here which means lots of sun time (or cold time). Wear sunscreen and dress in layers. Layers will also make trying on vintage garments much easier.
Homeward bound. How are you planning on getting that amazing piece of furniture home? If your vehicle is large enough, make sure to pack bungees and furniture pads for your precious cargo. If not, some vendors will deliver for a fee. Print out some maps to your home before hand to make the delivery process a breeze.
