Tips From Our Tours: Creating Private Space in Lofts

I lived in a loft for eight years, and one of my favorite things about all that open space was, well… all that open space. But unless you have a floorplan with a cozy corner for your bed, it can be hard to carve out a little privacy when people are over. Here, we take a look at five lofts from our tours that manage just that without putting up any walls.1 In Daniel's Hollywood home, custom bi-folding doors close off the bedroom without isolating it from the rest of the loft. The glass offers privacy while maintaining a sense of continuity throughout the space — and, the bedroom still benefits from all the natural light through the windows.

2 To separate their bedroom from their closet, Jules and Henry installed dramatic floor-to-ceiling drapery in their downtown Los Angeles loft. What we like about this simple solution is the versatility of it — you could install several curtain tracks or tension wires throughout your home and close off any areas as needed (especially to hide messes!).

3 Form and function reign in Adam and Daniel's DTLA loft. To maintain a little privacy between their sleeping quarters and their living area, the duo strategically used a tall open bookcase as a divider. (IKEA's Expedit modular shelving units are a great budget option for this!)

4 In this downtown loft belonging to Design Star winner Antonio, the illusion of a separate living room is created with low-slung shelves and a raised platform. Even though the space is technically not private, it still offers a sense of seclusion from the rest of the home.

5 Joel and McKenzie created a living wall of sorts in their renovated Rhode Island loft by using potted plants as a natural room divider. You could take this idea a step further by hanging a curtain of trailing succulents or air plants from your ceiling for an attractive yet low-maintenance solution.
