A new season is approaching and along with that inevitably comes change: a change in light, a change in weather, a change in lifestyle. Depending on where you live it can either be drastic or just a little blip; either way there are things you can do to make the transition easier. Follow me after the jump to find out how...
Bring the Outdoors In: One of the things we tend to love about summer is all of the outdoor nature time. Well, just because you are gonna be staying in more doesn't mean you have to shut the outdoors out. Start bringing in bright, cheery flower bouquets and new hearty plants. Look for indoor plants that work double duty, like English Ivy, they are not only beautiful and can make you happy but clean the air as well.
Purify the Air: Since we just mentioned cleaning the air with house plants let's take it a step farther. With windows shutting out the cold air, less circulation, and furniture off-gassing you're gonna want to keep the air clean with a Hepa Air Purifier.
Fall Cleaning: Spring shouldn't be the only season where your home gets a fresh new face. Before you go into cuddle up on the couch nesting mode, clean up all the nooks and crannies so you can hunker down in a squeaky clean space.
Get Cooking: Stews, soups, and pies are the smell of fall. If you love to cook this is surely something to look forward to. Stock up your pantry with new, fresh ingredients so you are ready on a whim to whip up your favorite fall recipes.
Brighten Up: Since you will be spending more time indoors this would be a good opportunity to add in some new bright and lively colors to your place. Get some new throw pillows, blankets, or accessories that will keep your home happy and energizing. If you are really daring, try painting an accent wall for the new season.
Bring Out The Faves: What are your favorite things about fall? Is it a great sweater, the best boots, a warm down comforter, a magnificent tea? Well, start to place them in your line of sight so you can get excited about their appearance back in your life in the not too distant future.
Get Moving: Don't let the natural slow down slow you down. Make sure you still move your body. If you will need to move your routine inside, you should start preparing for that now. Not only will it keep you in shape, but it will help your brain stay happy and positive through the coming months.
Be Social: It's easy to just get lost in your own world once it gets chilly and holiday seasons begin but don't let it. Make dates now for gatherings, dinner parties and holiday cheer so you are all scheduled and ready to go.

Howard Butcher Bloc...
I changed my gmail theme to mustard yellow. Bring on Fall!
At the risk of getting mauled by others, I am SO over summer. Bring on the leaves and boot /sweaters/scarves wearing and pumpkin patches and apple picking season!
I'm with Night. I've been over summer since the end of spring.
If you live in Texas, it's actually the opposite. With temps of 110+ lot of people stay indoors during the summer because it is just too dang hot outside to do anything during the day. Sure, you can wait until evening or nighttime to venture outside, there are lots of strange, big bugs (think giant cockroaches). You'll also get eat up by mosquitoes, and with West Nile being so bad this summer, no one wants to do that.
With Autumn coming to Texas--now is the time for us to get outside!!!
Is it too soon for me to be getting excited about Christmas? I've had my fill of humidity and then some.
Add me to the chorus of why do you need help transitoning to fall? It's summer I need help dealing with.
Not that the suggestions offered are bad. In fact, many of them are exactly why I love fall and winter. I just hate to see things like hot soup and cozy throws and hot tea be offered as a consolation prize. Bring them on! I've missed them!
I am so excited for all of these things! I'm throwing a Fall Equinox party. (It's on Saturday, September 22nd.) I highly recommend it. We're going to drink Absinthe cocktails and watch The Craft.
I am always happy to leave behind the disappointing days of summer (I live in the UK!) and look towards the predictable plethora of loveliness that is Autumn. Goodbye Canada geese and hello seasons of mist and mellow fruitfulness! The image above is from the new Toast catalogue, delivered through my door today, and represents all I love about the beautiful months to come.
I have always loved fall best of all the seasons. Warm enough days but nice cool nights, hordes of bugs much reduced (or gone) and clothes that cover flaws without getting too hot. Aaaahhhhhh. Nice afternoon tea or hot chocolate on the deck and stargazing that happens before my bedtime. Nice, crisp smells. And the kids are back in school! Yay!
We've had an incredible summer in Toronto. Unlike most of the previous posts, I really don't want to see it end :( I know that a lot of people have complained about the heat & humidity, but the alternative will be on us sooner than I want.
I'm with NIGHT too! Summer is my least favorite season. Can't wait for apple picking and pumpkin pies!
While I love fall, we really had a disappointing summer here in France. I wish I had some more. It rained and rained and rained some more, and I sure wish I could feel the sun before storing my straw hat and getting the raincoats out of the closet...
Contrary to Susan in Toronto, I cannot wait for this summer ouf of hell to be over. Only a 100 km n-w of Toronto, we had the terrible heat and humidity all summer long but without the rain that Toronto was enjoying all summer. In fact, we had a very dry winter (ok, I am NOT complaining about that) followed by inrecredibly dry spring and absolutely no rain except for a few frustrating showers (about a month apart) in summer. Strict ban of watering and then some. I would kill for a decent soaking rain. I don't want to see how much my gas&water bill jump up next season (I am on equal payment plan) because every Thursday (my only day in a week I am allowed to water) I have the sprinkler turner on for hours. Forget grass - I am just trying to keep my shrubs and garden plants from dying. It is so dry here that trees started to shed leaves at the end of July. One of the absolutely worst summers I remember in Canada.
What's the point of summer when you have to be cooped up in air-conditioned house all day long? I have to get up at 5:30 a.m. to walk my dogs because after 5 pm one can barely go around the block.
I too am in blazing Texas. Bring on Fall! It is now my favorite season.
Ooooo I'm in serious fall cleaning mode right now. Not really cleaning, but decluttering. I'm cleaning out closets and catchall corners for about a week now. And I'm not even pregnant! I have to admit, it is getting me in the mood to hunker down inside, though I will say that fall is a fabulous time to be outdoors here in PA. Cooler temps are made for walking!
