Fellow renters, I've got a down and dirty question for you about the bathroom...
How many of you change your toilet seat upon moving into a new place? This question isn't asked very much and since March is Renters month here on Apartment Therapy, I figured it was a great question to throw out there.
So, swap out the old, used seat for a new one? Or scrub the bejeezus out of it and save that cash for other necessities?

I replaced the seat in my last apartment, because it was a different color than the toilet and drove me nuts. I've been meaning to replace the seat in this apartment, because it's kind of broken - but I haven't gotten around to it in three years... (it's kind of odd, and I've never run across one in my random trips to the hardware store).
It would never occur to me to replace it for sanitary reasons.
I don't get replacing a toilet seat for sanitary reasons -- perhaps if the finish is very worn this might make sense, since it wouldn't be that cleanable. Otherwise? Just clean it! Do you replace the toilet seat every time you stay in a hotel room?
Toilet seats are like $7 at Home Depot. Totally worth replacing if the one that comes with the rental is really icky or too worn to get clean.
If the seat is functional and not significantly marred or generally hideous I don't see the point in removing it. A good cleaning is a must, but that applies to pretty much every area of a new apartment.
I never really thought about it before...but It will definitely be something I replace when I move in June! Thanks for the tip!

I do this always upon move in because it seems they are almost always discolored, chipped, etc. Not necessarily unsanitary, just ugly. The most recent one (where we just moved 2 months ago) was clean, but super thin plastic that was discolored to a nicotine yellow. In my area at least, WalMart sells a wood composite seat for about $5 so it's a cheap fix!
I replaced the one in my (otherwise spotless, beautifully maintained) apartment because it was scratched, scuffed, and the white stuff was peeling away to show the particle-board (or whatever) beneath. Yikes.
i work in reseda c.a (northview-southview luxory apartments) as a maintenance. Every move out we replace the toilet seat for two purpose. first sanitary reasons and second simply upgrade.I personally go for the new look that what i aim for.
