Tolix chairs are one of those rare designs that we never tire of seeing. That's partially because they are now available in so many different configurations that they adapt beautifully to each individual room.
The history of Tolix is long and interesting. In 1907 a Frenchman by the name of Xavier Pauchard discovered galvanization, which is the process of coating sheet metal in zinc to prevent rusting. He founded the Tolix company to make products using this method. His first chair looked remarkably similar to those still being produced today - and after decades of small tweaks, the famous Tolix chair was finalized in the 1950s to stack efficiently. In modern days, Tolix has been introduced in 22 colors and finishes, revitalizing the classic for a new generation.

I love that kind of chair! I was thinking about getting stools sort of like that for my art room, but I haven't ordered them yet. I might end up getting some for our back porch, though.
I've always found these uncomfortable to sit on.
A Frenchman man?
He's a Frenchman man, man!
LOL @ TML. I saw that too.
Too industrial for my taste. Love all the different colors though.
Love, love, love, LOVE the Tolix chair! But every iteration of it I've seen was waaaaay too expensive.
I bought a few of these chairs (replicas) for my loft dining area. I found a couple at HG's and a few of the armchair versions online for a fraction of what the real deal cost.

i bought a more inexpensive option to the Tolix chairs at Industrywest.com . i think they're very comfortable and they look great!
seltaught- i've been in the market for a dining bench. where did you get yours?
Sitting on metal chairs in winter...is chilly. Brrr!
They don't look very comfortable.
French By Design is a beautiful blog
@cbraun,
How are the Industry West chairs holding up? I've had my eye on some of their chairs, but unfortunately, they have not responded to my emails inquiring whether or not they have a showroom or an actual place I can go see their products in person. The idea of returning 6 dining chairs if they don't work out-or one, for that matter- is a major deterrent.
returning 6 chairs in the mail, I meant.
@mjr:
I got 6 chairs from Industry West a few weeks ago and they look great. They quoted 3-4 weeks and the chairs got there in 2. Look well constructed, have nice rubber pads on the bottom to keep them from scratching up my floors. I can't vouch for how well they hold up under heavy use but for $135 I can't think of a bad thing to say about them.
I just received my Marais A chairs from Industry West and they are absolutely awesome! They look exactly like the originals and have a lot of character. You can tell they are finished by hand and my husband and I are very pleased. We will be ordering more for our patio.
