- What I Love About My Small Home:
- I love the open concept of this studio, and setting the entertainment center in the middle of the room allows people to enjoy the TV from all angles, even on the balcony. The white pebble rocks on the balcony bring in the sense of Zen, and it flows inside the studio under the cabinets and behind the bed. Following this inspiration, most of the materials used in this space are eco-friendly, like bamboo flooring, bamboo cabinets, and recycled glass backsplash. All appliances are energy star rated and water-saving faucets save us 35% on utility bills and are eco-friendly. Even though space is limited, we still manage to fit in a wine bar/storage, an office, and even a breakfast bar. Multiple seating areas and versatile furniture come in handy when we have a party with friends.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- The biggest challenge for this small space is a storage issue. So I decided to create custom, wall-to-wall built-in cabinets. There are 60 plus drawers & cabinets in this studio. That is over 220 cubic feet of storage space, which is bigger than a 5'x5' storage unit. And this is excluding the 3 closets on the floor plan and any additional furniture storage provided. The built-in storage system not only solves the storage issue, but it also takes up less space, therefore solving the space issue. Using a mirror-like reflective finish on the cabinet door gives the illusion of a big space, without making the room feeling like a wall-to-wall mirrored dance studio. A washer/dryer combo unit is placed inside the built-in cabinet, hidden behind a removable office bulletin board. On the balcony, there is also a HVAC unit protected and hidden under the spacious built-in seating, whose front panel can be removed for servicing the HVAC unit.

I must say that you've done a beautiful job. I would love to see a house tour. It's a bit 'bland' for me as I love color and am a collector but still, this truly is a great space. Just reading that you built the entertainment unit got my vote. Wow-wee!
This is beautiful. I would live there in a heartbeat. My problem is that it looks like a rendering - especially the balcony shot. Is this a real place?
I love seeing a really well-planned space. Nicely done!
I would die for that balcony.
THAT WALL. THAT HEADBOARD. AMAZING!!!!!!!
I swore that I'd never live in a studio again but this place would make me rethink that. Beautifully done!!!!
Very sophisticated and ingenious vibe! Love!
@Amaranta Looks like me like it's high dynamic range (HDR) photography as opposed to a rendering.
Great use of space, really like the kitchen and sleeping area - very smart layout and way to separate different living spaces!
This place is perfection... great job!
um...does anyone actually live here? there are no dishes in the kitchen cupboards (well, there are 4 coffee cups) and no personal effects. And Tony doesn't refer to the place as his own; instead he uses "the space."
I love this place, but the pictures and the write up read like a real estate listing.

Hi Everyone, thank you so much for all the comments! I am so happy and honor to learn that my studio is selected and posted today! Best day ever! <3
@Amaranta: It is not a rendering, pictures are taken by a professional photographer, Luke Gibson, and he's done a wonderful job for me. Here is his website: http://www.lukegibsonphotography.com
@RTU: This studio is recently finished on March, and I've been using it as a weekend get away place. So I don't cook much there. I also staged the studio for this photo shoot. So I removed extra plates to keep it clean and simple.
@Avocado: Yes I am currently selling this studio, it has a lot of features and I do try to include all of them into the writing. Please stop by one of our Sunday open house, I hope you'd love it when you're in the space as well.
Awesome tour! BTW, does anyone know where I can get a bathroom tub door like this one--I love it!
@VANA
I custom order this shower glass, and it very affordable and easily install. They even install the towel bar on the shower glass for me.
This space is awesome! Why are you selling it?
@RJZII @YUVING Thank you! I guess I'm just a conspiracy theorist :)
i love the painting with gentleman with the great back.... but much like he doesn't live there i sort of feel like you don't either.
Definitely too staged looking. Most entries are from people who truly love their homes, and the spaces typically reflect a bit of the owners' soul. This just feels commercial.
Wow, it looks like one of those catalogue homes. Do you really live here??
@Ofelia, ANNE PCK It was originally designed for my dear sister, but she decided to stay in NYC for her career. Since it is a brand new remodeled studio, I decided to put it on market first before I permanently move in. Right now it is my weekend get away.
I did hand pick out every furniture, painting, and accessories in my studio, so it is a true reflection of my personal style. My design also provides a great solution to the storage and the space issue. Though I am not here all the time, I do entertain a lot with guests on the weekend, especially Friday & Saturday night (wink).
This is awsome..
I really like this. I particularly like the rocks and the bedroom wall, and the hidden storage solutions are innovative.
I don't really understand all the quibbling about how unlived in the space looks- he is following all of the AT rules and should be allowed a place in the competition as much as anyone else.
The photography is very good, btw.
Looks way too staged to even be nominated. Don't people actually have to LIVE in the apartments they submit?
I've seen more life in a model home.
oh guys, i don't know. are these real photos or just really fantastic interior renders? i've never seen such a shiny TV screen in my life. and why is the (fake-looking) stool in the first picture reflecting off the floor like that? also, everything about the third picture looks fake.
oops, i missed the comment above with the photographer link. apologies. it's a beautiful apartment... i just wish the photos weren't so heavily edited.
@yuving, I didn't mean to sound harsh, I really do think you've done a great job on the place. It makes me want to go on vacation.
Looks like computer generated images!! Am I the only one who feels so?
I think these are fake photos!!!!!
I'm living for the tile behind the headboard!
absolutely perfect
Fantastic use of space, materials and colors! Elegant and fun at the same time.
I really love the painting! Who's the artist?
Absolutely FABULOUS condo apartment & I love that area of West Hollywood. From soup to nuts, I really see myself in your kind of home. It's really too bad I don't have the cash to offer a bid on it :( I guess it's not meant to be? Sigh.
looks like a vacation rental, both good and bad. It's obvious that it's not someone's actual home.
Not like it really matters since this entry won't beat Daniel's Amazing Bones to go into the final round, but Tony's Custom should be disqualified. The contest rules are that the contestant lives in the space, and Tony clearly doesn't live here. He said the place was finished in March, and he only spends some weekends there, which means he's only spent SOME time there.
I am also not sure that this is really HIS. He doesn't give any specifics on where items are from, besides saying everything is "custom". Where is the painting from? Who is the artist? Don't tell me its a thrift store find with no artist named. The couch? Links to items? For someone who picked everything out, he sure doesn't know that much about anything.
Also, his entry has excellent grammar, but his responses don't. It's like two different people are interacting with us, but claiming to be Tony. This studio obviously exists, but does Tony?
There are always those people who cry "it's a rendering" "too staged" blah blah blah. Those people can vote for places that look more homely. I think this is awesome. Thoughtful clean design is always better than a space with lots of intentionally distressed retro-nostalgic knick knacks from Urban Outfitters. I find this to be more authentic and honest than a place that a 30 year-old has designed to look like grandmas cottage.
Thank you everyone for all the feedback! I've learned a lot from this project, and I take all the criticism into heart. I appreciate all of you take time look over the picture and writing down comments.
I will try to do a better job and making the space look not as staged, or rendering. The studio does exist, in fact we have an open house this Sunday afternoon from 2-5pm. Anyone is welcome to stop by and check it out. We'll be serving cupcakes too! :) Follow the link posted by ANDREA_XTINA for details.
@ATHENEUM The artist is ELOISE HOLBROOK, she does amazing paintings and most of them are limited edition! She also does custom work for people too.
@PAIJIMAY I can accept if I'm disqualified due to my entry is only "weekend home", I can also accept not everyone, or you, will like my studio, but questioning on my design integrity ONLY based on my grammar and references of furniture is another thing.
I am not born and raised in USA, I'm an immigrant. I know my writing is not good, that is why when I write something important like the research papers in the school, and the description for this entry, I have friends proofread for me. Obviously I don't have them proofread every comment I made on the internet, so you'd notice the difference here.
I purchased the painting directly from the artist ELOISE HOLBROOK, and the couch is from cb2 "cielo ivory sectional pieces". Please let me know what other items you have questions for, I'd be happy to answer you.
My design definitely has room for improvement, but I'm proud of it. I put my hard work and sweat into my home, and I am here to defend its integrity. :)
@yuving, I'm sorry if I offended you. I think your studio and design is lovely, and you should be extremely proud of what you've accomplished with the space! It seems many readers agree with me on this point.
I was just pointing out a discrepancies I noticed, and the difference in tone between the official entry and your comments made me question the authenticity of your studio/you. On top of that, other people posted their furniture/art sources in their comments, and you didn't, so I became a bit doubtful.
Btw, I don't think you needed a friend to proofread your entry before you submitted. Your English is excellent, no one would have had any trouble understanding you, and it's always nice to hear/read people speak about their homes in their own voice, with no edits/input from others.
While I think your design sense is excellent, I do think that the fact that your studio is used as a weekend home IS unfair to the other contestants who entered their actual homes into the contest. But please don't think I am attacking your "design integrity" - I was just expressing my doubts.
Good luck with the open house!
This is very attractive, but does NOT belong in 'small spaces'! A studio in NYC is the size of this bedroom area...
