Komelon 25' MagGrip best all around home use tape measure I've owned. Starrett combination square, most will agree the only square. Stabila box levels, pricey but hands down the best.
I love folding rulers, but the wooden tape is really attractive - makes me want to be a decorator or real estate agent or ? just so I could whip it out!
I have [versions of] 2, 5, 6 & 7 plus a stainless ruler & yardstick backed with cork. I use them all frequently. Got mutiples of #5 - free advertising give aways - stashed all over....backpack, both vehicles, junk drawer, tool box & garden shed. My vintage #7 belonged to my dad. I can assure you it did not cost anywhere near the equivalent oft $42 when he purchased it new. My Stanley (#6) has an attached belt clip. He's my best bud come weekends.
All that said, I NEED #1. Not that I'll shell out $17 bucks for it but a girl can dream.
Always a good idea to have a small tape measure in the car if you're out thrifting.
Folding rulers are the bomb! They are the only rulers that let you accurately measure the inside of box, cabinet, etc., because they have a sliding ruler that extends out of the first segment.
FastCap makes measuring tapes with a writable surface on both tape and tool side (called story stick tapes). This comes in really handy for remembering cuts and measurements. It also has a built in pencil sharpener too. They've become my most used tape in my shop.
