Gosh, that West Elm bed looks rather brutalist. Nothing warm and fuzzy about that one. And the price tags on those high-end beds would keep me up at night.
only one option for California King? Grrrr having a very tall husband.
Muji (opening in NYC on Friday) has another storage bed on their website. It's the "Birch Bed" on this (oddly large-image-laden and navigation-free) product gallery. $417.50 for a full/queen frame, plus $93.95 per underbed drawer. It's not clear from the photo whether they mount to the frame or just sit on the floor though.
Here's what we have at home-we paid just under 2000$
The nice thing is you can choose from over 200 fabrics and colors-

I hired a local carpenter to custom build a high storage bed, incorporating a nook at the foot for my big dresser, and racks to hold my big artwork. There is plenty of room to store a lot of stuff, including a 16-bottle wine cellar. It's accessed by doors on the long side and I made a custom slip cover to cover the whole thing. The cost: $800.

The West Elm bed is not pictured.
Correction, the West Elm bed is pictured in the collage. But the bed with locker-style drawers is from PB Teen.
Sultan alsarp by ikea, comes in several sizes, although not a bed, it is a bed base that has storage space. easier to find in catalogue than on line and because it's a base/box spring you can use your own bed. It is sturdy, affordable, a metal/ wood slat composite, looks like flou and is easy to lift, I can fit 6 large ikea skubb clothing storage bags for seasonal storage and have room left.
How about the IKEA's SULTAN ALSARP mattress base with storage Twin $200, Full $250, Queen $300 and King $350. It is the exact same design as your so called "High End" but with the low price.
...follow the white rabbit...
We have the Moby Dick bed by Flou. I would not wish the 10 month fiasco it took to finally have it at home and assembled on anyone! Beyond all the delivery and assembling problems, the people at the Flou store were incompetent and unconcerned. First stage: pay, wait 18 weeks for delivery. Second stage: wait 2 months for Flou people to locate someone who can assemble it. Lacking any instructions and most of the hardware, we jury-rig it ourselves in the mean time. Third stage: Flou finally locates someone who's seen this bed before, he determines the parts for the hinged storage area are not correct for this model. Stage four: we await the new parts...it's finally assembled. Stage five: we move from our small city apartment to a house in the suburbs, have a beautiful $7000 bed but no need for its storage space any longer.
There is some here as well http://positivespaceinteriors.com/
You can customize it to suit your needs. They don't specify cost, I am sure it's probably pricey.
Just wanted to add, on their website they specify they are a family owned business, and they only make what they sell, ie. after an order has been placed. Pretty eco friendly. Again, they can customize any size, 9 different colors of woods and many textiles.
For those craigslist scavengers, I found an old king size Henredon storage headboard for $50. If you have the floor space, it's the best read-in-bed-headboard ever, with tons of linen/seasonal clothes storage too.

Here's a smaller version (full/ queen?) in SF http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/fur/503752193.html
Flou doesn't seem to make the Moby bed any longer. I'd like to buy a used one if anyone is selling. Poltrona...?
Has anyone tried these beds with storage? http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/search_10151_10104?keyword=bed with storage&relatedwords=bunk bed with desk%7Cloft bed with desk%7Cbed with trundle
All I know is that many I've seen many of these beds and none were able to lift my heavy memory foam mattress adequately except the storage condo bed at The Condobed Company. I've had mine for almost 3 years now, works awesome and now got all my friends living in apartments cause it make so much sense!. Found a youtube video where it shows how it works @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REaPu9Twa0o
storagebeds.com has the hardware to build your own storage bed super cheap! It sounds like the ones you buy need assembly anyhow... Why not just start from scratch?
storage beds are best to save space....
