The Cherner is my money-no-object chair, i.e. I will never own one, alas. I don't like it with the arms though.

For people on a budget, some of the other bent ply chairs seem nice, like the Blu dot chair chair, the Tierra chair, or the Jake chair (cb2?). It would be great if someone could comment on their construction quality.

I have one Prouvé Standard chair (DWR floor sale is the only way I could afford it). The design is beautiful, but when I pull it in as an extra dining chair it gets tedious to sit in for a long dinner.

We have vintage Bertoia's at our table and I find them reasonably comfortable. It seems to me that the new ones are less flexible than the vintage ones - which is way less comfy! Plus the vintage chairs can be found for a lot less money. I think we paid $600 for four of them three years ago in Phoenix (with vinyl pads).

The Wegner chair would be my dream choice. They are comfy, gorgeous, timeless, and expensive!

I fell for the Supernatural chairs... the ones with holes in the back. Best part will be to use them outside when it is summer again.

They are comfortabel and upright, but a little flexible and not suitables for leaning with the front legs off the floor.

I second the Brno and Breuer comment--tubular steel chairs have a slight give to them that makes them more comfortable than wood. I have a pair of old Mies MR side chairs and they're very good over the long haul.

I had two Wegner Wishbone chairs once. They're comfortable but a little wide for a table in a most city apartments.

Nice list. I'd say the $229 CB2 Hippie arm chair is maybe "Middle" no? >$1000 for four chairs (including taxes) seems pretty close to lux to me.

Though I'd much rather have the hippies, I bought four solid wood chairs with a basic solid wood dining table new from the old IK for $100 in comparison. I'm just sayin' is all. That's lower.

By the way, does anyone have those hippie arm chairs? Do they stack? are they comfy?

Marten Van Severen's chair is the unsung winner of the dining room chair contest... you really ought to check him out at the Vitra store... or is there something about this great chair I'm missing out on?

They are the most comfortable dining chairs I have ever owned. I recently put them to the test by spending 8 hours/day sitting at the kitchen table while studying for an exam, with no butt pain whatsoever. We have them in ebony, but with the new cute colors available this year, I might have purchased them in yellow or green instead!

What about the Emeco Navy Chair? I just moved into my new condo and I've put in Wenge coloured floors. I think the navy chairs will give me just the right amount of pop.

Now if I can only find a dining table narrow enough for my room!

My parents had 8 Breuer chairs... I took them when I moved into my new apartment because they suited my place so well, so they bought themselves wishbone chairs to replace the ones I took. Now I want to trade!

It's essentially two guys in Denver. Absurdly high-quality, American designed and manufactured.

Since I eat dinner in front of the tellie I can only comment on my desk chair - an Eames Plywood side chair: SO comfortable. It was preceded by an Eames plastic side chair: also SO very comfortable.

But DWR has the Arne Jacobsen Series 7 chair - it is heavenly! I mean... my butt sent me a thank you note after I sat in it :) And somehow its miles better than all the cheap knockoffs you see out there (my previous, previous desk chair was a knock-off Series 7 from Urban Outfitters.. blech, left it on the sidewalk when I moved).

We love our Bellini chairs (http://dwr.com/productdetail.cfm?id=0044) with a stainless steel gurney-style table. Comfy, cool, kid- and mess-friendly.

Okay, since we're all sharing our chair sources....

Last spring I was on the hunt for metal dining chairs, reasonably priced. I considered collecting vintage Goodform, etc., at flea markets; but found a company online that refurbishes office furniture, and went with a set of McDowell & Craig side chairs. They finished and upholstered the chairs for me. I must say it was nice to have it all taken care of-typically I would be DIY.

If you're interested in them, I'll tell you that the chairs are a little smaller than I expected. We had to get used to sitting up quite properly, instead of lounging as we did with our old chairs. But they're comfortable enough. The refurbishing was professional, and they do have a lot of fabrics to choose from. I don't remember the exact price, but I think it was under $300 per chair including shipping.
