I know this is late, but I agree with Angel, I want to know where that red sofa in the picture in the upper right came from.
The red sofa in the upright picture is Nomade Express from Ligne Roset.
I bought the Olivia Queen Sleeper sofa from High Fashion Home. It's by far the best sleeper out there.
http://highfashionhome.com/sofa.asp?id=2500
www.highfashionhome.com
It's made by American Upholstery. You don't feel the typical metal bars when you lay down. You can actually get it in a twin, full, queen, or king size, which is very unusual.
I love my Twilight sofa. Roll the bolster all the way back and my feet don't have to touch the floor.
I recently purchased a very comfortable Queen sleeper sofa online from ClubFurniture.com. It sits great and it has a very high quality inner-spring mattress and suspension system. It's the type of sleeper that doesn't have those uncomfortable bars underneath the mattress. My guests love to sleep on it plus I got a great deal. Club Furniture has all types of sleepers (leather, slipcovered, fabric etc.) available in tons of coverings at http://www.clubfurniture.com/allsleepers.html
If you can *EVER* get your hands on a used Castro Convertible, grab it. Even if you have to pay to have it reupholstered.
It's a tremendously comfortable sofa bed to sleep on.
I will be forever grateful that I was able to get mine before the company that owned Castro Convertibles went out of business in 2002.
If I were an entrepreneur, I'd be trying to figure out who owns the patent to the mechanism, now.
I bought the twilight, I would recommend it. I got the one with the black frame though, I've never been a fan of the soft grey powder coat. Always felt "cheap" to me. They should have done it in a polished aluminum or zinc or something...something more natural looking.
ok, hands down, i am a designer and i have now found the best sofa bed ever, EVER. I spent all of two days shopping for sofa beds for a client of mine who is as usual: demanding i.e. quality, color, style, confort, blah blah. It was easy to find lowend options, but high end was tough. Well surprise, Natrona has a new line called sofaglide, this bed does everything for a lazy a--. I went to Room and Board, B&B, ABC, DWR-- all good options, but it was either bed or sofa, with no flexibility. SofaGlide was def. the best. Not cheap, but they did offer it in very high end leathers :to the trade: Edelman Leather. I didn't order it in fabric, but there were piles of choices. --- FYI to my fellow trade you must check it out. i am getting one for my clients office and his home.
I posted for a different article a while back about some sofas I had purchased online from a company in North Carolina for less than $700 to fit in a small spaces. I love them. I have since purchased the additional sleep sofa convertible for $200. It's not the normal pull-out bed that is so uncomfortable it probably wouldn't pass our Consumer Product Safety Commission codes were the foam mattress allows the bars underneath to bruise your shoulders while you sleep? It is an air sleep system that is a double mattress that expands in minutes to twenty inches. It's amazing. Check it out at http://www.simplicitysofas.com if you are looking for a truly comfortable sleeper sofa at an incredible price. You might have trouble selecting from the fabric though. I think they have 50 fabrics!
I like my American Upholstery sofa, but beware. I've had it for two years and have been sleeping daily on it. The foam in the bed part does get pushed through a bit and you do start feeling some of the hardware underneath. I am now considering getting a featherbed or some such to put on top of it. However, all in all, it's not too bad. As a couch, however, it's quite comfortable and relatively attractive. For the two years when it did work well, it was quite comfortable to sleep on it.
We just ordered the American Upholstery sofa. They've increased the mattress padding to 5 inches and redesigned the folding mechanism.
I own an American Upholstery/Leather (Room and Board sells their sofas under the name "Comfort Sleeper", and in NYC, go to Scott Jordan) Comfort Sleeper and use it as my regular bed for every night. For the first year or so, it was fantastic. Amazingly comfortable and no bars that I could feel. Afterwards, however, the high density foam got pushed through the slats underneath that make up the bed fold-up mechanism and the bed became unbearable to sleep on. Having said that, there is a 5 year warranty and Scott Jordan (the licensed reseller) has agreed to replace the bed portion of it for me free of charge, under the warranty. I would say buy, but be careful. Buy only from a licensed reseller (Scott Jordan is great) and keep all receipts.
Also, one important point. I live in a small NYC studio with small door frames. The sofa arrives from the store disassembled into pieces and it is super-easy to put it together, which the nice people from Scott Jordan did for me. No need to saw the sofa in half, break off the arms, etc. which is the common trick used to get the sofas from Room and Board, etc. into NYC apartments. These techniques often invalidate the warranties, whereas in this case, it does not as I believe the sofa already arrives from the manufacturer, disassembled. Just thought useful for people to know.
Really, the American Leather sleeper sofas are the best. I got the Connor Queen Sleeper at High Fashion Home, and it sleeps as well as you can expect a 5" mattress to feel.
http://www.highfashionhome.com/furniture-sofas-sleepers.html
So I'm in the market for a smallish and narrow profile sofabed (to fit up Philadelphia rowhouse Sears kit staircase) or chaise...something to stick an extra person if I need to in my office or to sit on comfortably as someone is on the computer.
I want to spend less than $1K but I've come across this at cb2.com that seems to be a winner but has limited reviews and I don't live near a cb2 to test it out...does anyone have any experience with this sofabed?: http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=102&f=4682
Actually, about 95% of the sleeper sofas in the US(!) include the identical mechanism(that bar and canvas system we all know)! I work for a company that deals with sleeper sofas, and only sleeper sofas, Sleepers In Seattle: http://www.sleepersinseattle.com/ There are actually several advantages to this system. First, the bar has been moved, and is no longer beneath your back. Also, there are several mattress options specially made for this system. And last but not least, the sheer number of choices and configurations available with this system!
To expound on what I wrote above; regardless of who makes the couch(Sealy, Ashley, Klaussner, Stanton, etc...), the mechanism within is the same, purchased from a third party(Actually a steal company!-Legget and Platt). The simple change of moving the bar, in fact so simple they should have done it ages ago, really makes a significant improvement. Now, 'the bar', is around the area of one's knee-caps, where nobody has as much weight as they do in their middle. A major advantage to the uniform system is the fact that regardless of style, a wide range of mattress options(PosturePedic, Air-Coil, Memory Foam, Latex) can be used for any sleeper!
That said, there are other routes available, including the less expensive, yet still convertible, futon style. Or, the luxurious <A HREF="http://www.sleepersinseattle.com/amer-up.html">American Leather Comfort Sleeper</A>, which places a premium, high-density foam mattress atop a solid wood platform, rivaling a premium mattress and boxspring set you may find in a bedroom.
hi, i am desperate to find a sofa bed that fits in my apartment. the problem is, it can only go in one spot, it must be 72" or less wide, and limited to a total length of 82" when pulled out. (that's 82" from the back of the sofa, which is at the wall, to the end of the mattress/frame, which almost meets the other wall!)
a few years ago, there was an interesting sofa bed store on Lafayette Street in Manhattan, but it has disappeared. their designs were very innovative and took up somewhat less length, when pulled out, than regular sofa beds do.
does anyone have any suggestions? when i have company, i have to sleep on the floor. thanks!

Sherry,
I think I know the perfect fit! The Comfort Sleeper by American Leather, aside from being the most luxurious sleeper sofa available, is also a compact, space-saving option. With a traditional sleeper sofa, the mechanism requires several inches(and almost two feet, lengthwise) on all sides in order to operate. With the Comfort Sleeper, all this 'wasted space' is elminated, as the mattress extends all the way to the inner-arm, saving width(Queen Sleepers starting at 69"!), and likewise with length, fitting a longer mattress, in a shorter area. I just measured the 'footprint' of one of our Comfort Sleepers on the showroom, and from the back of the couch to the foot of the bed, the measurement was not a smidge over 81"! I hope this helps!

I purchased an American Leather sofa bed called the Dawson which is sold through Room and Board. After two miserable weeks of waking up with aches and pains, I got rid of it. Simply put, it was the most uncomfortable thing I've ever slept on. This American Leather sofa bed made me yearn for my ten year old futon! True, it looks smart, and being smallish it is perfect for studio apartments, but the comfort level just isn't there. Room and Board did accept it upon return, and I ultimately purchased the Sliding Sofa Bed from DWR. Unlike the Dawson, the Sliding Sofa is easy to open and close, has castors on the bottom so not to scrape the floor, employs removable covers making it easy to clean as well as change out the color, has no bulky pillows that need to be removed, no zippers locking cushions in place, and the most importantly utilizes a foam mattress designed for every day use making it very comfy. It retails for $3,500, but if you wait, DWR does have sales. I also purchased a futon frame in the interim, the Orion by Strata. An absolutely beautiful solid black walnut, modern, horizontal slatted frame designed to remain stationary when opening and closing as not to scrape the wall. Made by Strata Futons, it is budget conscious at around $700. I would take either my Orion Futon or the Sliding Sofa by DWR any day over any American Leather product. Buyer beware!
Paulie,
Those are certainly valid points on the American Leather sleeper sofas. I checked out the Dawson and it seems that it is an older model, as American Leather introduced the "Generation III" Comfort Sleepers about a year ago and all retailers now carry one of the two versions, and only sell those models. The Generation III actually addresses several of the issues you brought up. Perhaps the most important upgrades were the changes made to the mattress and mechanism. The mattress within a Generation III Comfort Sleeper is an inch thicker than in the previous model, which allowes for a softer mattress, without bottoming out to the wood base. Basically, the platform was lowered an inch allowing them to fit the larger bed. Also, the mechanism is now 'spring-loaded' making it much easier to open and close, as it is quite a heavy bed! To top it off- the zippers are gone! There are now soft foam panels that essentially tuck into the seams of the back frame. Still, the Comfort Sleepers are a bit pricey, so it is nice to have options!

Yes, I have one of those "Jennifer" sofa sleepers- cheaper than dirt and not much prettier, clean lines - everyone loves to sleep on it but as a couch it's a bit on the poo side: much less comfort than I will take from any couch ever again. *shakes fist at sky -Also, it came with many toss pillows in varying sizes instead of the usual back cushions. Never again. Meh.
As far as the post itself here? It would've been neato if you'd had a numbered list of what is what, names & links - I think that is why so many people had questions: accustomed to that layout here when looking at multiple items to compare. Not trying to be critical, I'm grateful for the post and discussion- it was just a bit of puzzle it out post. Thanks.
has anyone here slept daily on an Ikea PS or Bettinge sofabed? I have one in my current apartment and use it mainly as a sofa. However, i'm moving to a tiny studio (180sq ft) and there really isn't space for a bed, much less a sofa :p I still want to be able to entertain friends though so I thought of buying the PS or Beddinge again.
Problem is, I'm just not sure how the Ikea sofabeds will hold up to daily use.... has anyone tried this? (it only has to last about 2 years... after that I will probably be moving countries). please do comment if you can! thanks in advance
I love my Blu Dot "One Night Stand Sofa." That said, I don't use it on a regular basis-- it's for overflow guests. I love the fact that people never guess it's a sleeper. And I'm odd as I like my sofa to be firm--not into the squashy couch thing.

I, on the other hand, found our Blu Dot "One Night Stand Sofa" to be a huge disappointment.
Yes it looks great in a room and has all the markings of nice piece of furniture.
However, it is remarkably uncomfortable to sit on (note to self: never buy couch with out sitting in it first). Not matter how one turns, this is not the couch to sink into and relax.
And yet our other couch is a cheap IKEA KARLSTAD, so it's not like we have crazy high standards for couch - sitting.
It is oddly high.
We have had ours for less than 4 months, standing in a room where it gets very little use and yet the wool fabric looks really ratty, pilly and bad. Like your favorite sweater right before you finally give in and recycle it.
But the kicker was when we finally had a guest who used it. OK.
1. You should not convert it to a bed if you are by yourself according to the instructions. Usually I don't pay too much attention to instructions like that, but in this case I could see how it could be very cumbersome to do so.
IE if you live by yourself and plan on using it by yourself; do not get it.
2. It sounds like you are breaking it when you sit down on it. Our guest was a person of 130lbs to 140lbs. Yet the couch sounded like it broke when she sat down on it the first time. Any movement on the "lower half" made ominous snapping and creaking sounds, resulting in her avoiding any movement on that side of the bed.
If you use half of a full/queen, you might as well just have a twin bed.
I like a hard bed but this one is pretty much the equivalent of sleeping on a mattress topper on a wood floor.
To sum up: this couch is like finally going on a date with a stunningly good looking model that you have had a secret crush on for years. Only to find that s/he has a BO problem and is dumber than a doorknob.
I'm consideing buying the Fontana sofa bed from Raymour and Flanigan. After reading this post, I'm worried that R&F hasn't been mentioned. Am I making a mistake?
American Leather Comfort Sleeper
We are not satisfied with the American Leather Comfort Sleeper. While it is a superior sleeping experience when opened as a sofa bed, it is very uncomfortable to sit on as a sofa. The foam seat cushions collapse to a very thin layer and tend to slope into the center of the sofa. American Leather furnished new cushions and they are only marginally better. This product is approximately $5,000.00. At that price, I personally expect more. As well, in my recent correspondence with the American Leather sales representative, I indicated I did not want to deal directly with the retailer. He simply forwarded that email to the retailer and indicated it was so the retailer could follow up. I expect more from a firm that is supposedly the manufacturer of high quality, high end products.
They are all lovely and in particular I liked the last one. A good daybed is one of the useful and functional pieces of furniture you can own, especially if you are in a small space.
I recently bought one in Metal from Original Bedstead, its a UK based company now also shipping in USA. Truly loved the quality and design. Simple yet so elegant, and reasonably priced.
Check their collection on their website - www.originalbedstead.com
Ashley Furniture HomeStore has a new line of furniture called "Metro Modern." It definitely has a more modern style. I like it.
Check out all of their new Metro Modern furniture (not just sofas): http://www.ashleyfurniturehomestore.com/catalog/searchresults.aspx?searchTerms="Metro Modern"
Ah, someone told me that previous link was broken. Here's a working one: http://www.ashleyfurniturehomestore.com/catalog/category.aspx?group=BedroomFurniture&category=BedroomMetroModern&ref=group-l
Sorry that i'm late to the party, but can somebody let me know who makes the bottom left sofa (orangeish with sweeping arms)? Thanks!
Does anyone know where that sofa bed on the bottom left come from?
also check out LLBean their prices are very reasonable!
The sofa on the bottom left of the second image (at the bottom of the post) is from Avery Boardman.
I have a couch/futon from Innovation in the Spider style, and in a cotton-like apple green fabric. What I like about is the clean lines...it's very simple and modern. It can also fold up in multiple positions. Not only does the entire back section fold up when you want to use it as a couch, but when opened as a bed, you can fold up the 'short' end, so that it's like sitting up in bed. Your back is supported so that you can lie in bed and read, watch TV etc. I often have overnight guests sleeping on this futon, and most seem to find it comfortable enough....
Has anybody tried the "snappy convertible sofa bed" from zuo mod? Please let me know. That seems like the only sofa bed that's affordable.
Hey Guys, I love the sofa bed collection that is on this site, but i strongly agree that Innovations Sofa Beds should definitely be on top or at least near the top of this list, Although their fairly new to the market and are not as widely know as American leather perhaps, but their combination of design & comfort is allot more appealing then anything else available today, The supermax deluxe in particular has the attention of our customers the most, at $1575 you have a beautiful sofa bed, that's very comfortable, is easy to convert in and out off the bed position and is really built like a regular mattress, Well i can go on and on about this sofa bed so i definitely suggest it be added to this list you can also check the entire line at www.modernsofabeds.com
New York Readers, You can visit us at Sit Down New York in Manhattan at 873 Broadway, 10003 - 212-777-7795. We have them all on display.. Thanks : )
Anyone know where I can get a sofa like the Lazy Working sofa (http://tinyurl.com/6c69vrv) or like this one (http://tinyurl.com/6kwqjg3)?
I love the huge sitting space without having to make any adjustments. I also have the space for something big like these. :) Thanks for your help.
I don't know about sofa beds... I've tried many from places like Target, and my experience was miserable. Being from San Antonio, Texas, its hard to find good places for sofabeds. However, there's a new place in my city that is selling them. I have heard good great things so far about their prices and service. They are called Maximo Furniture. http://maximofurniture.com/
Let me know if you have any feedback!
I bought mine here, and one my friends did - for NY these guys really rock - www.comfyco.com. Not sure for other states.
on the 1st image, the bottom left sofa that is grayish, where can i buy that sofa? Thanks

I recently purchased a sleeper sofa from www.modadivan.com. This is the best sleeper I have ever seen or used! I couldnt be happier and i have to show everyone who comes over how it works. I was worried at first that it would be low quality but man this thing is SOLID!! It s amazing and sleeps like a dream. The best thing is that its electric you just push the button and 10 seconds later its a memory foam bed. I would recommed this to anyone who is looking for the best sleeper sofa ever! i would even go as far as to say its the most comfortable sofa i have sat on! Thanks again! www.modadivan.com

Just a tip to everyone, I believe the same makers of Avery Boardman are the same as Carlyle.
1st Image, greenish large sofa on the bottom left, where can I buy that or what is it called or where can i get one like it?
can anyone confirm that comment by louryne -- that Avery Boardman and Carlyle products both have the same manufacturer? thanks.
