We were walking through a department store yesterday and noticed a bed that looked similar to this one. Of course, beds styled as top-heavy as that one aren't typical (or realistic) for the home. But we have to admit, we love a cozy-looking bed and strive to create a similar (but pared down version) of the department store bed at home...
Pillows (and lots of them) are the easiest way to create the top-heavy look. Colorful pillows can take the place of a headboard and the extra lot are great for propping yourself up in bed when reading. To add inches on your mattress, start with a thick mattress pad like this one from Kensington (every little bit helps). We love the layered look and prefer a down comforter on top of a regular, cotton comforter. Our go-to bedding colors are usually white and we add pops of color with blankets.

I'm not very interested in retail as an inspiration. Top-heavy's not the word I'd use. What do you do with all the extra pillows?
I feel like those extra pillows either go on the floor or on a chair/dresser, either way creating clutter or picking up dust
I actually really dislike this look. It makes it hard for me to pick out bedding because I can't imagine away all the one million pillows and throws and bedskirts and other things they want you to buy.
When I worked at Restoration Hardware we would make the duvets covers look extra luscious by putting two down comforters into one cover. It looked so cozy and inviting. This is something I do at home now for a super-duper cozy winter duvet.
Hmm, I like the two duvets in one cover idea - filing that away. I will have to sneak the second one in though because my husband would go nuts if he knew I was putting yet another layer on the bed. I don't love tons of pillows, but I do love layers of sheets, blankets and duvets.
I second jfinteriors' feelings: I love layers of duvets and blankets but not the pillows. What do you do with them? Do they get tossed onto the floor, nearby chair, etc?
I actually know someone who has at least a dozen pillows on their bed. It's a bit much. I like fluffy down comforters with 4 pillows (2 on each side) lying flat & then 1 decorative pillow. The simpler the better I say.

I have 2 big king-sham pillows and 1 decorative little one that go on the bed (they get piled on the sheepskin under the giant dressing mirror when not on top). While I agree that they're 'extra,' The bed just looks... incomplete without them. I like big fluffy blankets, comforters, etc, and I think you need the pillows to balance them- although I wouldn't add any more than minimal needed to 'balance.' I actually do lounge on them sometimes too.... :)
I have to admit to kind of liking the look of the top heavy bed, even though I know in practice I'd hate all the pillows. I think it's the five year old in me (I've also had a long term crush on canopy beds, even though one would completely overwhelm our bedroom). I do like the layering of duvet over blanket/comforter over sheets, though it generally gets pared down during the summer. For pillows we stick to 2 shams, 2 pillows. We have a Cali King, which I've heard looks good with 3 standard shams and pillows rather than 2 king of each, but I've never put that idea to use.
I love some layers on my bed like blankets and sheets as well for a cozy feeling...not too much though. Otherwise it gets a little crazy. Some pillows are fun - not a bed full.
And that doggie is adoreable.
I assumed the stores load up on the pillows to prevent people from sitting on the beds. We have tons of pillows (three each for sleeping, plus the big sham ones for making the bed), but somehow we manage to use them all - they're down so they squish down to practically nothing.
I am anti too many pillows. They just look like clutter. I do, however, have my bed on risers to make it the right height as I am 6' and my husband is 6'4". Of course there's the added bonus of extra storage underneath for snowboards and suitcases. Planning on making a custom bed-skirt to cover up the gap made by the risers (if I can ever get around to it!)
Love the two comforters in one duvet idea. Thanks!
Thanks for that trick with two comforters in one duvet, love it!
I'm okay with a look of a pillow-heavy bed but I'm thinking that would be impossible for me to live with. Did anyone else see "Along Came Polly" when Jennifer Aniston 'liberated' Ben Stiller from all the pillows on his bed? I'd keep thinking of that scene.
Two duvets in one cover is an awesome idea! I used to work in a department store, and that trick probably conned me into buying a few sheet sets because they looked so comfy.
But still, I'm a minimalist when it comes to bed. I use a fitted sheet, two pillows (one for each person) and a duvet. Anything more than that makes me sweat and is too much effort to take care of, haha.
count me as another inspired to throw two quilts into the same duvet cover!
but i disagree that the multiple pillows are to prevent sitting on the bed, why then is it hotel standard at big chains to have so many pillows?
I think the multiple pillows are for people who use their beds as a hanging out place. When I stay in hotels with all those pillows I'm much more likely to prop myself up and watch TV in bed, which I do not do at home. At home, bed is for sleeping.
If I could make my bed top-heavy with a fat little French bulldog, I'd do it in a second.
Actually, it's best for the bed if it is left undone, with the comforter off.
Hi Bacon!!! I've missed you're cute face!
I've done the two comforters within one duvet thing - it's perfect in the wintertime when the place gets extra cold.
i love pillows, big fluffy blankets - i think it comes from growing up in cold places. i have a (bad?) habit of buying funky pillows and shams, especially vintage and hand made ones and then having no where to put them. so i've made sure that my living room couch and my bed have similar palates, and then i can mix, match and move around my decorative pillows as i wish. for example, my bedroom is mostly black and white, and my living room has a big chocolate brown couch - both can be accented with yellows & teals!
oh i love lots of pillows. that bloomingdales one is way to much for me though. currently on my full size bed I have a body pillow, two king size pillows and two standard size pillows. i have a down comforter that i layer with a quilt, but i dont sleep with the comforter. its much to hot in here in florida right now. i do sleep with all of the pillows however. its kinda like sleeping in a fluffy cocoon. i love it.
I succumbed to the allure of the top-heavy bed once. I bought all of the extra pillows, the euro shams and regular shams, the rolls, et al. I made the bed with all of the pillows twice before banishing them to the closet. I just don't think it should take that long to make a bed - a chore I don't particularly enjoy in the first place. Besides, one of the lovely parts of life is being able to lay on a bed, over the covers, for just a few seconds that inevitably turn into an hour. :)
In the words of Ben Stiller in the film Along Came Polly... decorative pillows serve no function!
