Brominated flame retardants are still found in many of the electronic devices, including laptops and computers, that make our lives easier and more pleasurable. The good news is that they keep these devices from bursting into flames. The bad news? They can migrate out of their casing and mix with the dust in your home. Try these simple tips for a healthier home when cleaning up your electronics.:

  1. Turn off and unplug electronics when dusting to avoid static electrical discharge affecting your electronics during cleaning process.
  2. Wipe furniture with a wet cotton or microfiber cloth. Stick with water and skip synthetic sprays.
Dust your electronic equipment frequently; use compressed air to expel dust and other particles from hard to reach areas like inbetween keyboard keys.
  3. If you need to clean the surface of an electronics device, consider using a cleaner specifically formulated for electronics; spray onto cloth, not onto device, when cleaning.

  4. Vacuum frequently with a HEPA filter vacuum and allow for open window ventilation.
