When my boyfriend and I first shacked up together, we fought over what chair to put at our shared desk. He favored something practical, like an ergonomic black chair on casters, while I preferred to have something that better complemented the decor in our bedroom, where the desk called home...

Now a friend of mine is moving in with her boyfriend and having the same troubles.

She acknowledges that his choice, a mesh chair from Office Depot, would be better suited to spending an afternoon surfing the 'net. But since the desk is going to be in their living/dining/entertaining/media room (gotta love open floor plans ...right?) she also mentions that most of the time, they won't be sitting in the chair, but looking at it. In that case, something better to look at takes the lead.

While she and her beau are still sorting out the issues, I can tell you that my boyfriend and I had chosen to go the aesthetic route and get a modern-looking short stool for our desk. It was less than comfortable when sitting for long periods of time, so we found that we ended up sitting with our laptop in bed rather than sit up at the desk.

Have you guys ever given up practicality for style in your home office? Tell us about it in the comments.
