Train-Inspired Bunks

Although not double decker-style bunks (like these beauties) we're enamored with these built-in bunks inspired by the sleeping car of a train. By nestling the beds against the wall and not making them the focus, the designer has smartly opened up more floor space for play.

The bunks are part of the third-floor children's loft in Southern Living's 2009 Idea House in Port Aransas, Texas. Curtains enclose each bunk for privacy and across from each bunk is a drawer and storage cubby. You can see photos of the rest of the house (including the playroom) at Southern Living. Kind of dreamy, isn't it?

Although quite beautiful, this space doesn't seem quite appropriate for children. It doesn't look like it could withstand a dirty hand print or an accidental spill. I know children haha.

While I agree that the white/light tones might not work well for younger kids, I think the general idea is a great one... it could look lovely in all sorts of colors. I could even see using built in double bunks built in if you have a small room but a lot of ceiling height. Very nice!

wanted to add that a wall mounted lamp with the drawn curtains could make it into a reading nook for the older kid who wants to read at night while the younger sibling sleeps.
