Christian Schallert's Barcelona apartment looks like an empty 258-square-foot room until the cabinets open up. A bed is hidden under the balcony, a dining table drops down from the wall... even the kitchen is spring-loaded behind a wall of cabinet doors. Kirsten Dirksen from faircompanies.com videotaped Christian unfolding his apartment, and Tiny House Blog posted it online — click through for the video and links.

Shaw's Original Fir...
aaaaaaand this is like Lego, how?
misleading title is misleading
and why is the guy humping a pillow?
I must have missed the humping part....? I thought the apartment was pretty cool.
MWesdock - I think travislessness was referring to the picture.
I guess this is a good idea for someone who doesn't like stuff and isn't claustrophobic. Being the opposite of both those things...I would not dig living there. Also, I think it could be executed better, I mean it's one thing to not have a lot of things, but it's another to be pretty much devoid of character.
not like Legos but amazing nevertheless.
a friend toward the end of the video explains the lego-like-ness
i also thought it was rather characterless until i realized that the real living space and focal point is the balcony, and the rest of the apartment is for taking care of business. now i think it is pretty wonderful
Fantastic.
I'm really feeling this apartment! The balcony does help it to be less claustrophobic. I recently purchased a ground floor studio flat (renovated into 1 bedroom) in Solihull, West Midlands, UK but wouldn't have bought it if i didn't have its own private back garden. Having private outside space really make a huge difference when you have a small living space.
As for the gentleman's apartment lacking character as mentioned in other comments - his space seems to work for him and his friends, and they seem to have enough character themselves!
Genius. And the guy has his priorities in order...a dishwasher in the kitchen, and a magazine rack in the toilet closet.
When you think about, a single person only uses one room at a time, so why not have one room that becomes whatever you need it to be at any given time? Makes perfect sense.
This is genius.
omg, get off the accent pillow!!!!
Great use of space. I hope I never have to adapt to one so small though.
Yes, get off that pillow, and come over to my house, immediately!
@Travislessness - glad to know I'm not the only pervert who wondered what the pillow did to deserve that.
This is genius! I watched this start to finish! More more more of these types of spaces!!!
Awesome!
There is something delightfully wrong about that photo!
I think there is a different but conceptually similar apt previously mentioned on AT in HK somewhere....
I think they meant it's like Tetris. Pretty cool!
I thinks this is absolutely amazing & the balcony makes it even more so!! I love that everything is tucked away and super neat. I am the complete opposite of this lol which is why I find it so fascinating!
I think this amazing so smart!!!
and the guy looks so cute and proud when talking about the place.
I don't get the comments about the pillow you people are perverts watch the video and you'll understand.
I think this apartment has TONS of character! I like how it keeps him active, always changing the space to suit his activities or mood. Though most people would never be organized enough to live this way, I can see how many of the individual elements could be applied to other spaces, like the fold-out dining area, stairs that function as storage, etc.
That photo is really unfortunate.
AMAZING video! Look down and... LAME comments... I normally don't post many comments, but wow... really. Let's be mature. They picked the photo because he is moving things around... albiet not a great choice, but no reason to comment.
I love how I might not have seen this as Legos but they had the idea to make the analogy of building things for yourself. It may be a cultural difference to analogize the action instead of simply the visual and in that sense we should seek to understand before having gut reactions.
I would love to create a similar space one day!
I love when people have a concept, idea and are so inspired by something (like boats) that they carry it through like this. Its a really smart space and he is so cute.
Its perfect for him or someone like this who is young or young at heart and does lots of traveling.
The fact that he found this space and turned it into something is something but to this degree its amazing.
it's pretty cool how the bed part way out makes a couch/lounge.
Brilliant! What an amazing and genius use of space. I'm in the midst of downsizing and this was a true inspiration.
(Finally got to watch the vid; it is not like the other apt after all, but both are "active" apartments, iirc.)
Yes, nutella storage is super-important. I need to get right on that myself!
It is in no way like legos. Nor is it like tetris, or things would disappear!!! And you wouldn't get them back.
Lulz, he's cute. "Going down is so much faster..." XD
Thanks for sharing this video. I do not care whether this is lego or not. The ideas being presented by the video is inspiring. I will use this as inspiration in designing the new 36 sqm apartment that I recently acquired.
Amazing mind. This is definitely a fine example on how to live simply. Something we can all learn from.
