Catching zzz's while away from home has come a long way since we were kids. While the urge to bore you with detailed descriptions of sleeping on drafty hardwood floors while ensconced in cheap polyester sleeping bags is hard to resist, we figure it will be much more helpful to take a look at the latest and greatest in travel beds aimed at jet-setting kiddies.
- 1 Peapod Plus by Kidco ($84.95)
- 2 Tuck-Me-In Travel Bed by The Shrunks ($79.00)
- 3 GoCrib by Guava Family ($249)
- 4 My Cot by Regalo ($24.98)
- 5 Pack n Play with Newborn Napper by Graco ($149.99)
- 6 Kidzz by Smoof ($92)
While there were many beds to choose from, this list is meant to be broadly representative. Let us know which ones we may have missed that you have found success with.

Ercol Bar Stool
We have the peapod. We love that it can fit inside our suitcase.
We have the Kinderkot, which looks to be the exactly same as the Peapod Plus pictured, it's so easy to use & travel with but my son did outgrow it quickly & I found it tricky to settle him in it.
With my time over I'd probably get the Baby Bjron one.
Phil & Teds also have the Traveller2, though it's a bit difficult to put up it's tiny when folded & light.
I had that first tent when my son was 15 months old, and he figured out how to unzip it, and crawl out. He didn't like being confined. SO, I recently gave it to an 8mo. old to keep in Guatemala so the mosquitoes don't bite him on his trip.
We got the peapod tents for our twins this spring for a road trip. I was sick of the pack n plays and how heavy/bulky they were in the car and to carry in and out at our destinations. Plus they were getting snug for the boys who aren't even 2 yet. It took some getting used to but they LOVED the peapods. The tents fold up really small and will fit the boys for years. My extra-tall 4-year-old nephew fit in them just fine! And, cheaper than the pack n plays.
We have the Bjorn. It was so expensive but my daughter transferred to it with ease from her normal crib. I had been concerned because she hated her bassinet.
They sell sheets fit for $30. We just got a jersey crib sheet from Target and tucked it in well.
It won't last as long as a peapod, but it was worth it for us and we can always resell it later.
We also have a peapod. We loved the design, but my daughter never would sleep in it. We tried about three times. But she wouldn’t sleep in a pack-n-play, either. She’d only sleep in a porta-crib, which isn’t exactly travel-friendly. Sigh!
(won't last as long because it's shorter)
Has anyone ever tried the Phil & Ted's Nest? We're looking for one that can double as a bassinet in our house but that's light enough/easy enough to fly with for occasional trips to grandma's house...i.e., not the Pack 'n' Play, though I've looked at some of the others listed.
we have the go crib and loved it. we took it with us on several road trips as well as trips to iceland and japan. i like that you can get in and out through the top and how stable it is. we really felt like it was a great investment and closest to being in a traditional crib/pack n play.
I have the nest and it's great, light but very stable. Really easy to put up and take down. You can gate check it because it's a baby bed, but the storage compartment can hold a lot of stuff so you can sneak on extra weight that's not in your suitcase (or you can just check the whole thing - it's sturdy enough). The handle straps snap onto the sides so it's easy to carry with the baby in it to. I like that I can slide it back and forth on the carpet to help the baby to sleep (instead of rocking her in her crib). I couldn't settle her in something that had tent poles, etc.
My daughter is 4 and still sleeps in the Peapod when we travel. She's used it since she was 9 months old for travel; best baby item we ever bought. I really like that you can pull the shades down to make it darker. We even set it up inside our family tent when we go camping!
We've had PeaPods (original and Plus) for over 5 years. Our oldest still likes the cozy campout feel of the Plus even though he's fine in a regular bed.
Here's my comparison of the original and the Plus from 2007: http://babytoolkit.blogspot.com/2007/06/more-peapods-for-me-please-peapod-plus.html
I should probably write an update as that review- an update to our 2006 review of the original- is now 4 year old. We're still very happy with both beds.
We also use a Bumbleride stroller bassinet or Pack N Play with bassinet for our pre-crawling infant. We don't use any non-wearable bedding until the kids are about 18 months.
I also have peapod plus's for my twins. They've been sleeping soundly in them since they were 6 months old (we, too, couldn't stand hauling play yards everywhere) and they are still using them at 5 1/2! We also pull them out as "guest beds" for sleepovers. LOVE the peapod!
Love the peapod..my only complaint is that it tends to stay pretty warm and my girl is already a fairly sweaty sleeper. Otherwise, greatest thing ever.
Probably going to spring for the Bjorn travel bed soon though..
Love the peapod overall too, but 2 things I don't like: its a bit awkward putting a sleeping baby inside, and the zipper is loud.
I'm really liking the idea of the Tuckaire Travel Bed. Has anyone used that one? We have seven months of travel coming up; and I'm a little nervous about it for our 3.5 year old and 2 year old.
We have the EZ-Bed, which isn't as fancy as the ones you have posted but for $39.95 isn't too pricy and it easily fits in our suitcase when deflated. I wrote a post about it on my blog here:

We have the Shrunks/Tuckaire Travel Bed. We've had it for over a year and love it. The bed sets up quickly, and is really small when packed away. It fits in our luggage with other clothes easily. Our daughter is a really tall 3 year old and she has plenty of room to grow in it. @Melichan - I'm happy to answer any questions you have. Our daughter started using this as soon as she outgrew her pack-n-play
We have and love the toddler Aerobed. We chose it over the Tuck-Me-In bed because it is all one piece, whereas the reviews on the Tuck-Me-In bed were that the interior portion could come deflated causing a suffocation risk. The Aerobed blows up very quickly, is comfortable for our 3-year old (we bought it when he was 2), and is very sturdy.
We have the Samsonite Pop-up bubble. Pretty good even without the inflatable mattress that you need to buy separately.
We had a travel tent by Phil and Ted and we got so much use out of it over the years, it was incredible. My daughter used it for all trips we took between the small toddler age up until age 4 and a half -- it opens at the top (not the side), kind of like a crib, which she liked when she was tinier. Plus she couldn't climb out of it!
We have the Regalo cot shown above, and my preschooler daughter loves it. She transitioned to it from the pack 'n play when the baby came along, and she likes that it is more of a big kid bed. It is lightweight, compact, and very packable--it folds up just like a sports/lawn chair. There is no padding and it seems a bit uncomfortable to me, so I just put a thick folded up blanket on the cot underneath the fitted sheet that comes with it, and that works fine (there's always a thick blanket available at grandma's or the hotel, so it's no problem).
You missed Room to Grow 4 in 1: http://www.amazon.com/Room-Grow-Inflatable-Play-Beige/dp/B001CBMX60/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311870684&sr=8-1
I got one and took it camping. It takes up so little space compared to my regular play yard and I can take it with me everywhere. I also works as a changing table and kiddy pool. Love it so much.
It's too bad the Shrunks/Tuckaire reviews said "the Tuck-Me-In bed were that the interior portion could come deflated causing a suffocation risk." Maybe it is with the older models. There are two separate areas to inflate the bed but if our travel bed loses air, it loses it from both sections as they are connected internally and "share" the air.
We have the GoCrib and love, love, love it. Taken it on two cross-country flights so it's definitely easy to carry. Setup and breakdown is a snap and it's very sturdy but still light!
Love our Peapod Plus! Whether flying somewhere and putting it in our checked luggage or now needing the pack n play for baby #2, it's made travel so much easier.
We have the Peapod from Kidco and we love how compact it is. At first we almost got a pack-n-play, but it would have been more hassle to fly with it than with the Peapod. When our baby wasn't mobile, she absolutely loved it and slept all night. Now that our little one crawls, she thinks she's being contained and screams all night when we travel. We're thinking we'll come back to it when she old enough to think it's "cool".
We had a pack'n'play briefly (went back to the store for full refund ... thanks to our expert re-packing skills LOL) and then tried the PeaPod which was more of a play tent at home than anything else. When we travelled we co-slept all night, it wasn't worth trying to get our baby to sleep in a strange place in a strange tent that she was used to playing in. Our bad.
my son's been sleeping in that pack-n-play, it's worked great so far on the higher setting, but now it's time to drop down, so we need to find a crib. We need to find an IKEA alternative now!
