Being that I just turned another year older and bought my first home, I think I may have settled on a new birthday tradition: treat myself to a coveted decor item on my birthday.
Up until now my birthday tradition, that my mom started, was to buy a new outfit on my birthday (which I'm not sure will be given up). Now that I have an entire home to fill out and not a lot of money to do it, I think it would be a good time to up the ante and start putting away a little bit at a time to purchase one exciting item on my birthday each year. Now, it doesn't have to be big or expensive, but something that I wait and save for that will make getting it on that special day all the sweeter. Now, the question is, do I pass up this unprepared year or do I pull the trigger on the FLOR rug that I really want for the dining room?
Do you have any kind of decor buying traditions?

White Enamel Flatwa...
That is pretty cool carpet tile.
Tax return season, then it's on.
I want in! My birthday is in a few days! haha
Been married for decades to a man who is hopeless at buying gifts. I always buy myself something great -- often jewelry -- for my birthday. Someone has to.
Hmmm. My birthday is in February. How about on your UN-birthday, six months before the actual one?? (That would be next month for me!!) Now THERE is a thought!
Mine is in eight days and I can't think of another jewellery or tealight holder I would want. But what I really need is a sidetable or a new luxurious quilt cover - both of which I wouldn't normally buy any other day of the year. It's best to start the search early, it took me five weeks to find one sidetable I like.
I'm interviewing someone tonight to clean the apartment. THAT is luxury!
what a great idea, I should think about is since my b-day is a month from now.
but dang, I already treated myself to a Persian rug 2 months ago.
Wow, Flor has really upped their game.
*sigh* around here it is usually more like a birthday gift of a new toilet to replace the old leaky one.
I have tried to adopt this tradition by hinting to my hubby to get me something for the house when he asks what I want... but it always ends up being jewelry or gadgets... great gifts nonetheless.
@MAESTRO58 - You got me on that one! I'll save the cleaner for Christmas.
I fell in love with that pattern from FLOR too, but after ordering a sample, I changed my mind. It's hard to get an idea of the pattern from the small sample, but the color is definitely more blue in real life than the teal I was expecting, and the pattern looks a little odd up close. But that's just me!
We started doing this for birthdays and Christmas once we bought a house. Usually we kick around ideas at the beginning of the new year and then decide what the big projects for the year will be; our house is 83 years old so there are always projects. This year we will be tackling a window that needs to be replaced (and then have new molding done to mirror the rest of the house) and a new front door made to accommodate the original leaded glass insert; if we can afford it, our back door also needs to be replaced but that will not have to be a custom job. Next year is probably going to be redoing the upstairs bathroom; it was added in the 1970s and we want to remodel it to fit the age of the house. For us at least, this is a much better set of presents than if we bought each other gifts--we don't need anything and we love to work on the house.
