Having never watched "Friends", I didn't pick up any vibes the way the first three commenters did -- I just knew I liked it.
Why is it that if something recalls (for some) a date in recent history, it is bad, bad, bad; but if it makes them think of the 50s and 60s (i.e. mid-century modern) it is wonderful?
A beautiful piece of furniture should be allowed to be a beautiful piece of furniture, no matter what decade it may call to mind.
Well, my first reaction was that it was hideous, regardless of timeframe. I like clean lines, hence my (and many other's) liking of mid-century modern furniture. It was a reaction to something and had significance on so many levels as society changed. This is just a crappy piece of ugly furniture that, as chelc pointed out, looks like it belongs on the set of a horribly unfunny sitcom from the 90's. It's comical.
I would never buy anything from Pier 1. 9 times out of 10 its not even real wood. I saw this item in the store last week and it looks pretty cheap. I guess I just prefer to stick to antiques and furniture with character or tells a story rather than buying new stuff that half the time is poor quality.
OMG, I usually refrain from saying I don't like something and just add kudos when I do. This is awful, awful, awful.
I agree with everyone else, that thing is FUG. I don't care what decade it's from, it looks like a piece of novelty "joke" furniture.

woops, what I said came off snarky. I meant it more as an observation. I liked friends, I liked the 90s.
I just reread the description on Pier One, and I didn't realize it was black, the picture looks like wood stained dark purple, which to me coupled with the curves, seems like the friends apartment, (not a dis). I see what you like about it in black. That being said, living in a small apartment this piece could not live with me. I had a dresser that curved out (in the front) and it was not a great use of space.

but she liked it, she made space for it, and that's all that matters, everyone has a different style, that's why people visit AT.

I worked at pier 1 back in the day, their furniture was cheap, scratched and dented easily and was way over priced for what it was. Invest in good furniture! You want wicker, candles, weird glass things that take up space, go for it. My advice, stay away from the furniture. Guess who wasn't ever a top sales-girl!
