Good design is all about the layers, and changing up the cushions is an easy way to add another pattern to your decor. Want a punch of plaid or a jolt of cheetah? Put it on the cushions! It's unusual, but it's ultimately less bold than having an entirely patterned piece of decor.

If you've got a worn sofa, covering the cushions with blankets or vibrant textiles lets you lets you hide the part of the furniture that's worn without replacing the whole piece. You can have a new look at a lower cost.

Covering up the cushions is an especially great option if you have kids or pets, since the covers are easy to throw into the washing machine. It's also easier to replace damaged cushion covers than to replace an entire sofa.

If you have a neutral sofa, covering your cushions is a quick way to change up your decor. One month cover them in pink, and the next, in blue. It's one step up from the average accent pillow in terms of visual impact.

What do you think? Is this a trend you would adopt?
