I have been enjoying the almost zelig-like appearance of Ikea's Docksta table in many, many homes over the past few months and thought it would be good to document. The Docksta, for those of you who aren't familiar with it, is Ikea's $150 shameless knockoff of Eero Saarinen's famous Tulip Table (Knoll). If you were ever in love with this classic shape, the Docksta is for your new best friend...
While it's completely fabricated from fiberboard and polymide, there is no doubt that this baby is popular and, when treated gently, satisfyingly Tulip-like and functional (some say it can be wobbly). Here's all the beans.

maybe crop photos so we don't see the "For like ever" and "Keep calm and carry on" posters anymore? i'm just sayin'..
:-p
I was wondering about those posters...what is the deal with them? Are they special or something because I see them everywhere lately!
Now I really want a "one of us... one of us..." poster.
It's on my list...as soon as I get rid of the boxes in my dining area. I would totally get the Saarinen if I had a few thou to spare...but I don't...so I won't.
KTG, LOL!
The original tulip table can be had for around $1000 used, IIRC. However, I picked up a Docksta a couple of months ago used for $75. Yeah, it wobbles a bit - I probably need to tighten it up - but I don't eat at the table often, and you simply cannot beat that price.
yes sunspot42, everyone who bashes ikea (not meaning you) or any other retailor where you need to build it yourself, forgets that whatever they are building, is only as stabble as the the effort that was put into building it.
i know in ikea directions, your recommended to tighten periodically. makes sense, since the items aren't being assembled in a factory, your assembling them yourself. I know plenty of people with ikea products, and never, not a one, has ever had anything fall apart.
I think the CB2 Odyssey table is a closer facsimilie to the Tulip...i love mine, it looks great with my vintage McCobb chairs.
"One of Us....One of Us" Is surely a quote from the movie "Freaks"

Hmm... just pulled up the Odyssey on CB2.com and can't say I agree - the base looks too separated from the stand. The Docksta isn't MY style but I definitely find it to be a sharp look (quite obviously, its popularity precedes it)...
I wish IKEA made a smaller version of the Docksta -- I would love to put it in my bedroom as a nightstand.
I thought of using the Docksta as a small conference table at the office.

I'm guessing it's gotta be worth the $25.
I liked both posters the first 50-60 times I saw them.
