Local Looks: Trim Your Tree, San Francisco-Style

While sipping a pre-dinner beer and flipping idly through a pretty, pretty catalogue the other night, I saw the most amazing narwhal ornament, and coveted it (as a gift for someone else, of course.) But since that big national company has enough money to make such a pretty catalogue, I'd rather give my dollars to little local shops who have lovely narwhals of their own…

  • Rare Device on Market has a shiny narwhal (the Christmas unicorn!) and a sweet set of cookie-style ornaments that you won't have to resist eating- the pig is my favorite. And if I know Rare Device, they'll have more ornaments rolling in throughout December.
  • At Flora Grubb Gardens at 3rd and Jerrold, you'll find Aerium Ornaments (a living world in a glass teardrop), petite succulent ornaments, and a menagerie of sea creatures (another Narwhal!) and birds (not available online, or maybe just not yet).
  • The Curiosity Shoppe on Valencia punch-out felt ornaments might have the perfect amount of do-it-yourself for a busy holiday season: not too much, and pretty foolproof. The kit makes 20 moose, acorns, trees, and more.

Other great ornaments spotted around town: fortune cookies and hot pink unicorns at Lavish, shiny food ornaments (beer steins, donuts, ribbon candy) at Cliff's Variety, and blown glass ornaments with feathers inside at Serendipity. Any other local favorites?
