It can be hard to take pop stars seriously when they enter the design realm. Lenny Kravitz's graphic and gorgeous wallpaper collection from Flavor Paper is a striking exception.
Last year, Flavor Paper, the progressively nostalgic New Orleans/Brooklyn-based wallpaper company launched “Tropicallismo” a collaboration with Lenny Kravitz. The collection of five patterns (each in at least 4 color variations) was inspired by Brazil in the late 1960’s. Think bold prints, exuberant colors and Vasserely on steroids. Yes that is a Op art wave printed on a crocodile skin motif. John Pawson it's not. As Kravitz explained “Wallpaper has always played a part of our designs and we’ve been using Flavor Paper since the company started...The idea behind Tropicalismo comes from traveling and living in Brazil. Ultimately I wanted to create something beautiful, rhythmic and sexy, like the people of Brazil.”
The list of international pop stars that have either designed, bankrolled (or more likely licensed their name) to a fashion label is forever expanding. Justin Timberlake, Will.i. am, Kanye West, Madonna and Beyonce are just a few examples of this phenomenon. Whether any of these celebs have serious professional (versus monetary) ambitions in the realm of fashion is debatable.
Lenny Kravitz is an interesting anomaly. Over the course of the last ten years, Kravitz has been quietly transitioning from a “weekend” interior designer to becoming a serious practitioner with an evolving aesthetic. His look, which mirror’s his own fashion style, is heavily influenced by the early 70’s. (Kravitz helped resuscitate interest in Paul Evans and has an impressive collection of both his furniture and sculptures). Kravitz Design was established around 2004 and since its inception Kravitz has designed a handful of uber-glamorous hotel spaces in addition to his own constantly changing list of personal properties.
