Name: Tsia
Location: Davis Park – Fire Island, New York

My husband, our best friend and I built a 4 bedroom house together from the ground up on a rare open and buildable plot of land on Fire Island. It took us a number of years to pull together the architecture, the permits and the financing — and in the middle of it we made a child, so that changed things a bit. It's pretty interesting co-housing. we tried to create a house that fit into the surroundings there and took the best of the old style beach shack venacular (ourhouse has a very modest footprint - built like a ship) with lots of modern amenities (skylights, high ceilings, electricity).

I doubt we'll every be perfectly satisfied but we are trying to create an archetype of The Beach House together. The furnishing is ongoing. Since everything gets ferry-ed over things have to be very modular. Most everything is second hand or salvaged including a Wegner daybed, a set of Aalto stools, several sets of Russel Wright dishes, a pot bellied wood stove (that I hate), and a Victorian mahogony dining table someone has lent us surrounded by mismatched Eames chairs. Last year we had a set of Reitfield chairs recreated from original plans and flat packed. They look excellent on the deck.

Thanks Tsia!
