My seven-month-old daughter is in transition. Too big for the much-loved Infant Bather Pad, she has now graduated to a big plastic blue thing, which we are not as enamored with. Very hard edges, not enough support, it's really big, etc. Both were hand-me-downs so we can't complain (theoretically) but we have been trying to figure out our next step in her bathing adventures.
Towel on the bathtub floor? The old kitchen sink? Or another tub? I figured I would take a look and see if there have been any advances in tub technology since big blue. Here is what I found. Click through the images above with links to where you can learn more or purchase.

Once my kid outgrew the kitchen sink, I just bathe with him, no gadgets needed. These things aren't designed for Manhattan apartments.
I bathe with my babe. No whizmos or special apparatus necessary.
We have the Eurobath from my older daughter. It's great, but obnoxiously big. I don't think we'll use it again for the new baby when he gets to that point. I like the looks of the Boon collapsible tub, though!
Sink, then tub ... nothing fancy! Instead find a good foot stool to sit on when you graduate to the tub
We never had space for a dedicated baby bathtub and the sink was too small. We had her in the big tub, reclining in one of those sling things. But once the baby could sit on her own, we put her in this: http://amzn.to/q3WjRy
After she became too big to squeeze in there, we just put her in the tub on a non-slip mat and kept a hand on her in case she wobbled. But she soon got the hang of the motion of the water. (We keep a small stool next to the tub to sit on and save our knees and backs!)
We used the whale tub pictured above. I loved it, although it was kind of a pain to stash when we needed to shower. I just lent it to a friend who just had her second and she likes it too. For the record, she bought one of those silly bucket tubs pictured above and threw it out in disgust after a few weeks.
The eurobath is awesome! It's a little big, but it's worth it for me. It's so much more comfy for my 5 month old than the whale tub was. She's much more stable in this tub. And it will still be big enough for her when she gets older. I fill it up in sink, and then put it on the counter. Bathing her standing up is much easier for my back than bending over the regular tub.
This one is my pick. Even if it is big. I used it inside my tub and hung it up when it was my turn to shower. It lasts the longest and I always felt like my son was safe in the tub.
I have this one and love it - Jahgoo Baby Bath ($25 on amazon). It's not too big and the baby seems to really like it.
My son and I bathed together from the time he was born. There is nothing better than laying in the tub with a warm baby on your chest. He was never scared or cried and it was such a wonderful bonding experience. No need for any extra gear!
We used the whale tub, and I actually used it longer for my second child. I'd fill it and put it on the island in the kitchen. That way I didn't have to bend over and try to hold her upright in the bathtub. Once she was steady when sitting up, we just started plopping her in the tub with her older brother. We used to stash the tub on the bottom shelf of our changing table because it didn't fit anywhere in our bathroom. With our first, we just stored it in the bathtub.
Kitchen sink, then regular bathtub with a towel on the bottom.
Like others, I say bathtub. Once he/she can sit up on their own, it's not like you're dropping them in there and taking off to watch tv, so why not just put them in the tub you already have?
We have the blue equivalent of that big plastic pink thing (hand me down) and I have to say it was well designed and transitioned really conveniently from teeny baby (hammock insert) to regular infant (one side) to stable infant (other side) and frees up both hands for shampooing or whatever. But it is a monster. We also were given a sort of sling-chair that was just a bent wire frame with a hammock inside that was much easier to slip into a cabinet and worked pretty well but you still needed a hand to prevent slipping down. Once baby could sit, she was on her own in the big tub with no issues.
Once my boys could sit up, I moved them to the bathtub, too. It gives them more space and they have fun playing in the water. I'm actually donating my old baby tub tomorrow. :)
Both my babies loved coming in the shower with one of us. My daughter was a 4.5 lb. preemie, and we did buy a baby bathtub for her, but only used it once. The sink really is easier.
We received the Spa Baby tub, like the last one pictured, as a shower gift. And I have to say it was great, my son loved it! I sat it in the kitchen sink to be at a suitable height and for the added stability. Though the non-slip ring on the bottom of the tub is more than adequate, but you can't be too safe! Once it was out grown I bathed with my son until he was able to go on his own. And actually, it's one of the few baby items I've held onto it as it makes a great hand-wash tub.
We used the Puj Tub which was just okay but a little nerve wracking once he started moving a little. We then transitioned to the Tummy Tub which we loved! Our doula recommended it for young babies because they can be immersed safely in warm water up to their shoulders so it's more womb-like and relaxing. He loved it so much! After about 6 months though it was getting too tight so we now use the Eurobath pictured which also lets you fill it more. It's nice, but pretty huge. You don't waste as much water filling it up as a full size tub though, and we only have one shower so we don't have to clean out the whole tub every time we need to bathe him.
We had the Eurobath too, which we liked, but it was HUGE. Once he was about 6 months we started putting him in the regular bath tub and he was happy there!
"Just use the regular bathtub" sounds like good advice, except -- not everyone has a "regular bathtub?" My Brooklyn Apartment does not. have a tub. We have a Tummy Tub (the one that looks like a clear plastic bucket) for our 6-month old and I guess when he outgrows it I'll be showering with him.
Whoa. Awful lot of typos in my post. Sorry.
I'm like TexanHolly, I bathe with my baby, even though we received a baby tub at our shower. What I like most about bathing with my baby is enjoying the bath first :). I run the bath for me first (nice and hot for mommy) and relax while my hubby has her..then when my 15 mins is up..add a little cold water and enjoy the bath with the baby. Though, its harder now that we have a toddler and a baby.
I really wanted the clear plastic bucket one! But my sil had the pink one and other hand me downs. Our babies were really big 9 lbs when born and super slippery so the sink was not a safe option for my clumbsyness.
We used a bucket made by ... Prince Lionheart? He really seemed to appreciate being warm up to his chest.
And when he outgrew that, we used this, which I loved:
http://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-White-Hot-Inflatable-Duck/dp/B000066665/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1318464956&sr=8-1-fkmr0
We kept it inflated all the time for a few months. No hard places for head bonks!
I used the Eurobath with my first son until he was over a year old. It was nice because it uses *way less water* than filling up the whole bottom of the bathtub (so it's faster) and it held him safely. With our second son I used the Eurobath until he could sit up in a bath chair, and now I'd bathe both boys at the same time in the regular tub.
Whatever you get, don't sweat it. The resale on baby tubs is decent and they aren't THAT hard to store. I keep ours in a hall closet, no biggie.
I bathed our daughter in the sink even though I had a baby tub cause it was easier. Once she got too big for it I tried the bath bat thing but she would want to try and climb and slip and fall, so I used one of those infant pool floats to put in the tub, and that worked wonderfully and plus I could deflate it and store it under the sink
Did no one mention the IKEA bath tub? http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70197588/
That's what we used after graduating from the kitchen sink and it worked great. It uses less water than the regular tub for solo use...and to bathe both kids together, we would put the baby in the IKEA tub, and then run a regular bath around it for the toddler. On occasion we would bathe them together, but it was nice to have a shallow amount of water with back support and good rubber treads for the baby, and deeper, different temps for our son in the main part of the bathtub.
We hung it from a hook right in the tub.
Oh....and the IKEA tub is only $6.99. So if it doesn't work for you - it's not a lot of money out of pocket.
We had/have the My First Years tub. It was actually pretty great as long as you clean out all the nooks and crannies.
We used the First Years infant tub pictured above for the first few months. Just as we were moving to the big tub, a friend's son who is about 5 months old than my little guy took a spill in the tub and chipped a tooth. Paranoid me found a little inflatable tub that sits in a regular tub for less than $10. Just a little piece of mind. It also came in handy when we went on a cruise this summer with the then-15 month old since we were not in a room with a tub. We can shower with him but he enjoys a bath so much more.
We've bought two different baby baths for our two boys, but we never use them. It's just too easy to bathe with them.
We have the eurobath by primo in white. It is big but we love it. She hated the tub when she was little so I just took her in the shower with me, but we've been using the Eurobath since she was about 3 months old. She is now 18 months old and we'll probably use it til she outgrows it. It uses a lot less water than using the tub without it. And if she splashes outside of it, it just goes into the big bath tub and not onto the floor. Just keep in mind it is large! If you have room for it though, I love it. When she was little before she was sitting on her own, I folded a towel to place under her on the laying down side. She probably would have been fine but it's a little slippery and I felt more comfortable that way.
While it may have been nice to have a dedicated baby bath tub, we managed completely without one and the little terror (j/k)is almost 2. I could have done without the fancy hi-chair, just the restaurant kind or the pack-n-play or crib or... We seemed to have a lot of unused baby gear. The doorway jumper, ergo and various wraps and slings, and Boppy pillow were the best purchases to date.
At around 7 months we just put our kids in a regular tub with a few inches of water... Even if your child not sitting up solidly yet, she will be in a few weeks, so a big tub works well.
My babies get in the tub with me. Sure I've gotten sprayed with newborn poo once or twice but...
We started off with something like the tummy tub, and it lasted until about 6 months. Our space is limited, so we couldn't have a larger child bath (tummy tub is now a laundry bin).
Then we moved to the normal tub with a bath support seat (which we got for free from freecycle and have gotten about a year of use from). I'm not sure what brand it is, but it is kind of like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Dreambaby-L610-Bath-Seat/dp/B000MPMDJ4/ref=pd_sbs_ba4
The seat folds down to be about 3 inches tall. Our tub is clawfoot. We can slip the folded down seat underneath it.
I don't know if it was 'necessary', but it made me more comfortable with a squirmy baby in water. He loves to splash and play, and I don't feel like I need to have my hands on him at every moment (I'm watching and within arms reach - it is perfectly safe - but I can also bring a load of laundry into the bathroom and get some folding done while he splashes or do other things like that).
we have the "Whale of a tub" by Fisher Price. It was great at first, but my large baby outgrew it before he could sit up on his own! We just took to having baths together until he was a little more sturdy and now I can bathe him without getting in the tub myself. I do need to get a little stool to sit on though. My back is killing me!
kitchen sink, and then inflatable duck tub that fits in the bathtub. the duck saves a lot of water and minimizes the chance of her bashing her head on the cast iron.
If you have it, just move to the bathtub. We got a non-skid mat for the bottom and that's it. Even before baby is sitting up its easy to just lay them down gently. And only fill it up with less than an inch of water (or whatever the pros say the water level should be)
I love the design of the Bato bathtub. I'm tempted to buy it, but my son is already getting too big (maybe for the next one?). He outgrew his baby tub and we began to use the inflatable ducky that someone else mentioned in a previous comment. We were on a trip to visit my family and my parents bought it because it was portable and inflatable. He ended up loving that tub and we had to buy one when we got back home. It has a lot of space for him to splash around in and since it's inflatable, it's comfortable for him to rest his back on. I'm dreading putting him in the bathtub as it's old and cracking. I guess I'll have to invest in a good mat.
I love the Eurobath. When my daughter was really tiny, we put a towel in there for support. Now she is 8 months and still fits great. Actually two 8 month olds fit in it. The best part is the molded interior that accomodates little babies on one side and bigger sitting babies on the other. It is large, but we put a hook on the wall of our shower and a strong through the hole on the edge of the Eurobath and hang it up in the shower when not in use.
*string*
Love the flexi-bath for small spaces. My 19 month old still uses it. We stash it in that 2 inch space between the tub and the sink, and it takes up no room at all. It's in great shape after well over a year of use, and we fully expect to use it for future kiddos.
